THE TEXT:
Author Ian Baxter provides a well written and informative text detailing various German Wehrmacht equipment, weapons, uniforms and insignia. There are a total of 40 pages of text, not including the page titled About the Author, Foreword and Introduction. The remainder of the book is dedicated to the photographs and illustrations and the captions associated with them. The captions actually provide the majority of the text in the book. Even with the limited number of pages of text, Ian Baxter goes into great detail with a no-nonsense type of writing that provides a wealth of information on German equipment, weapons, uniforms and insignia as the title of the book states. The text goes into great detail in all areas of the book as outlined on the contents page, please refer to the contents listing for the areas that are covered through the book. Some of the information provided are details such the specific year that various items were introduced and authorized for wear, what types of uniforms and head gear were worn in the specific theaters of operation, the specific colors of the various uniform items to include the collar piping, the official designation numbers of the uniforms and headgear, the proper way they were to be worn, how they were specifically cut so that they fit the individual as required, what types of accoutrements were authorized and how they were worn to include badges and rank insignia. Personal gear discussed and how the items were worn or carried are things such as ammunition pouches, flashlights, anti-gas capes, bread bags, bayonets, wound dressings. A section I found to be interesting discussed what the soldiers did to improve various items, such as boots, when dealing with extreme weather conditions in order to provide more protection and comfort and what the military did to improve the items that weren’t meeting the soldiers’ expectations. Ian Baxter doesn’t use what I refer to as fluff writing where a large amount of non-essential extra text is provided just to help fill the pages. As I read through the text, I didn’t notice any spelling or grammatical errors. Grammar and spelling might not be an important factor to everyone however it is something that I take notice of and pass on my findings. I feel that Ian Baxter has covered and detailed the various items listed in the contents listing well and has provided the information in an easy-to-read format which the detailed oriented reader will benefit from.
THE PHOTOGRAPHS:
There are a total of 233 black and white photographs and 45 color photographs included in this volume. Ian Baxter chose subject specific photographs and did not include photographs that strayed from the main subject of the book. The photographs are a combination of in-action photographs, photographs removed from motion pictures. photographs that were staged for the photographer as well as photographs taken for propaganda purposes. Most of the photographs are clear and easily viewable; however, a few of them are somewhat blurry and a few of them appear to be too dark, while others appear to be too light. This can be typical for the period of history being discussed, and the quality of the photographs is of no fault of the author, and they do not take anything away from the book. I have seen some of the photographs in other publications, however the majority of them were new to me. Several of the photographs are close-up photos and they prove to be an excellent reference source. They show things such as the variety of uniforms worn to include headgear such as soft caps and helmets, rank insignia, medals and unit insignia, Y-straps, ammunition pouches, boots, coats, foul/cold weather gear, binoculars small arms, various weapons such as hand grenades and machine guns and several other such items as the title of the book states. Also shown are various vehicles such as trucks and motorcycles, various tanks and armored vehicles and larger weapons such as howitzers and flak guns. The photographs cover various locations on different battle fronts and also during different seasons and types of weather. The majority, if not all, of the photographs will prove to be of great interest to anyone interested in the military uniforms and insignia, small arms, and other equipment used by the armed forces of Nazi Germany during World War II due to the details they contain.
THE ILLUSTRATIONS:
This volume contains a total of 25 full color illustrations provided by Brazilian illustrator Renato Dalamaso. The artist’s illustrations are nicely done and show members of the German military in various uniforms in different types of units such as infantry and amor and also shows a variety of small arms and other weapons as well as armor. The illustrations show the combatants in various combat locations such as North Africa and the Eastern Front in Russia and other combat areas. Please refer to the attached scan to see an example.
THE CAPTIONS:
The captions are well written and explain the accompanying photographs nicely. The captions go into very specific detail as to the actions taking place, dates and locations, individual’s names and military rank, specific types of weapons shown, specific designation and German names of uniform items and helmets, military insignia, military units, types of tanks, armored cars and military vehicles shown, and other such information. As I read through the captions, I didn’t notice any spelling or grammatical errors. I was impressed by Ian Baxter’s captions as they are very helpful to the reader due to their detailed content as opposed to other captions that I have seen that are very brief and lacking in detail.
CONCLUSION:
As with the other titles from Pen & Sword Books, I was impressed with this book. This is a very nice reference book that contains a well written informative text, many subject specific photographs, well detailed captions and more, all detailing military uniforms and insignia, small arms, and equipment used by the armed forces of Nazi Germany during World War II. As with the other Pen & Sword Books titles, I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to others as it will be a welcome addition to one’s personal military reference library.
