A review of Samer Kassis book on Panhard AML-90 service in Lebanon.

Samer Kassis is an author specialising in armoured vehicles in Lebanon. With this, his fourth book, he begins a series specifically focused on this topic. The first volume is dedicated to the Panhard AML-90, which is also the first part. It is a softcover book in A4 portrait format, printed on good quality glossy paper. It has 110 pages, most of which contain colour photos of the Panhard AML-90.

Practically all of the photos are at least half a page in size, with some covering a full page or even a double page spread. This allows for a high level of detail to be seen.

The first 15 pages of the book are text only, beginning with the author's explanation of how the book came about and why he is attracted to the AML-90, or, as it is called in Lebanon, the Banhar. This is followed by a brief history of its development and the use in the Middle East. From here on, it focuses on the history of the vehicle specifically in Lebanon. In addition to the detail of distribution by units, combat events in different periods and places are also recounted. There is a section on the Banhar in the Lebanese Forces, its integration into the army and its eventual transfer to Intervention Regiments.

The following 70 pages are the core of the book, a large collection of images from the personal archive of the author.

There are plenty of photos of the AML-90 in service, divided into different sections according to units or battles. The photos are quite clear and of good size, and almost all of them have explanatory captions. These captions are positioned inside the photo so the images can be bigger, but in places that do not obscure important details.

They also show a wide variety of camouflage schemes, and it is possible to appreciate the wear and tear and dirt.

Next come eight pages dedicated to four models of the Banhar in Lebanon. Two pages are devoted to each model, with unpainted photos so that the additions to the original kit can be appreciated, and also of the finished models. There is also explanatory text about their construction and special features. A nice touch is that the author has included a reference to the photo in the book on which the model is based. Finally, the book closes with the same text as at the beginning, but in Arabic.

Conclusion

Samer Kassis' extensive knowledge on the subject and large photographical archive are put to good use in this book, which documents the use of the Panhard AML-90 "Banhar" in Lebanon. It is an excellent photo collection,  with lots of images in good size and adequately captioned.  The text is concise but useful. The last section features four kits of this vehicle based on images included in the book.
