Review
MiniArt have released a dozen or so M3 Stuart tanks in 1/35th scale and with a mix of interior models in that mix. This offering does not have the interior aspects and so is a model that will be easier to tackle. The model is supplied in a cardboard tray with a card lid. The contents are packed in a single plastic bag but this contains a small bag with the decals, photo etch and clear parts in it. I am not a fan of this approach due to the risk of damage to the photo etch and decal sheet. Due to the different versions that have been released there are a surprising number of sprues for a model of this size.
The hull of the model is what I call flat pack design as enables MiniArt to provide the maximum of accurate moulded on detail and allowing all hatch detail to be provided as separate parts. The hull assembly is saved by the inclusion of the firewall between crew and engine compartments, this firewall helps you get all of the major mouldings correctly aligned and angled on the model. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you take your time and get the parts spot on in all regards. If you have never taken on one of these Stuart’s you will I believe be surprised by the number of panels that come together here.
The suspension is another really nicely detailed but it is fixed in a neutral position. As the model goes this is fine as the tracks are link and length which provides great detail while not being overly difficult to use. I have yet to hear of any real complaints on how MiniArt has tackled this but it should be noted that the bogies are quite complex and require a bit of thought. If you are intent on manipulating the suspension after market tracks will be needed in my opinion. the tow cables for this offering are secured using photo etched parts which will be a pain for me. The cables themselves need to be sourced by the modeller and a number of products are out there for this purpose. The eyes are of course provided by MiniArt.
The diminutive turret of this release again has a surprising amount of detail for its size. This includes excellent detail on the main gun including its breach with MiniArt not having taken short cuts with the various machine guns both on and in the turret but also the hull. All of the hatches can of course be set as the modeller wishes and is one of the benefits of kits both with and without an interior. Another nice inclusion is clear vision blocks for the turret.
MiniArt have supplied six finishing options for this release:
