Into 2022: The Battle-Hardened Heavy Armor Evolution

Entering 2022, the rules of battlefield survival were ruthlessly rewritten by the harsh realities of combat. As the most numerous modernized main battle tank in the Russian armed forces, the T-72B3M carried high expectations at the outbreak of the conflict. However, confronted with pervasive, multi-dimensional strikes from top-attack anti-tank guided missiles, drone-dropped munitions, and various loitering munitions, its traditional protection system exposed fatal vulnerabilities.

To counter these severe battlefield threats, Uralvagonzavod rapidly introduced a wartime upgraded variant—the T-72B3M (Mod. 2022)—in late 2022. This steel behemoth received an all-around protection upgrade: dense Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks are fitted to the lower front glacis, hull sides, gun mantlet, and turret roof; additional armor plates are installed on the hull rear; slat armor screens are added around the turret ring; and the anti-top-attack roof screen is further upgraded. Forged in the fires of battle, the T-72B3M (Mod. 2022) strives to arm itself into a heavily armored fortress adapted to a brutal war of attrition.
