Otto Carius, winner of the oak leaves for knight's cross, was the protagonist of heroic combats, such as the battle of Malinava ( Malinovo / Malinovka), where, being leader of the second company of s.Pz.Abt.502 was sent to contain the Russian advance of the 5th tank corps. Equipped with a Tigre I Medium Production tank (Mid Prod) and with only one tank accompanying it faced the Russians, destroying 17 tanks in less than 30 minutes, including the new Soviet tank destroyer the JS-2.
