Hmmm...that brings me back to a build log of a T-34 with the BS-3 Fieldcannon in the turret, that a friend of mine did a few years ago.
It was such a beautiful piece of work...

This thread inspires me to do such a mix as well.

The AAV7 with 30mm remote weapons station looks very interesting.

I usually thought that the turret with .50cal and 40mm MK-19 were both too weak in firepower for today's threat environments.

Does anyone have additional information on this concept and why it didn't go through?

I should have written "a new Diesel engine":

No, the super M48 was a follow-on to the M48A2GA2 which had retained the gas engine of the M48A2, though you are right about the main gun. I remember this one as I had just transitioned from M48A5 to M60A3 so all things M48 was of interest.

I know it's not a tank but how come no AEC armored cars with Valentine and Crusader turrets?

It's all a question of timing
The Super M48 was intended as a more affordable way of converting existing M48's to very near M60 standard to make it comparable to modern tanks.
But, the end of the Cold War came in the way, why buy an upgrade to my tired old M48 when I can get M60's, Leopards and other stuff almost for free ....
M48's in some armies had diesels, but maybe not in all armies ...

http://www.military-today.com/tanks/super_m48.htm
"A privately-funded project, the Super M48 was intended to offer users of the M48 Patton an upgrade, which would allow vehicles already in their inventories to compete with more modern MBTs. Though a potentially attractive product for nations unable or unwilling to purchase newer-model MBTs, the timing of the Super M48's arrival onto the market in the mid-1990s could not have been worse. The market was suddenly choked with literally tens-of-thousands of used tanks built in the Cold War, many of which were new and/or well-maintained. Wealthier M48 users could afford to purchase used, reduced cost M1 Abrams', Leopard 2s, and Challenger 1s, while customers with smaller budgets now had access to a flood of T-62s, T-72s, AMX-30s, M60 Pattons, Leopard 1s, and other tanks, that were not only an improvement over M48s, but were also often sold at scrap value (some were even outright given-away to favored clients for free). In this market environment, the Super M48 project was effectively doomed."

Everything needs to be judged in the same "light" as when it originated. Why buy a T-Ford when there are Teslas ? Because Elon Musk hadn't been born yet 100 years ago ...
/ Robin

Edit: Why stick a M1 Abrams look-a-like turret on an M60?

I'm still looking for a picture of the Raython entrant that used a modified Gepard turret...

Not sure why the project didn’t get fielded. Could be cost? Or loss of some utility? Turret mounted directly atop vehicle which meant loss of use of cargo hatches. Would of made a huge improvement over the UGWS though.

John, that's not a Churchill turret on the A27 hull but a Vauxhall cast turret design for a Cromwell. The roof layout matches the A27 rather than Churchill. Prototype only though, as far as I know.

Thank you for correcting me on that one Robert, I had no Idea. I'll have a new search to do now to see if I can find any more info.
