Interesting, and a little surprising. I was hoping for a new IDF M50, however, I'll have a look at this when it hits the shelves.

A long time ago Tamiya made a 1/21 scale M40 Big Shot. Guess they want to revisit that?

Could this be some kind of retro re-release thing?

Or a re issue of the AFV-Club?

Or all new? They do have the HVSS but that's it. The hull was wider and everything else would have to be new.

I think there was a picture of that at the Nationals on the Tamiya table,it looks like an Italari with some new sprees.

Once the kit number is released we will be able to tell the origin of the molds. Simply calling it "MM" or part of their Military Miniatures Series isn't specific enough. (The Italeri M107, released by Tamiya, is listed as part of the MM series by Tamiya USA, but it actually isn't.)

ITALERI did make an M40, but that was the Italian M40/75 Semovente, which is STILL a very nice kit, except for the junky Tracks- Luckily, there are several aftermarket manufacturers that make replacement Tracks for this kit, and TAMIYA's old Semovente, as well...

An all-new M40 "Big Shot" would be very welcome in US/Allied circles, even though AFV CLUB's M40 is a very nice kit, too...

If TAMIYA's M40 is a re-box of the older AFV CLUB kit, it wouldn't be a BAD thing, especially if there are 8 Figures included- Could they be PLASTIC castings of the two older HOBBY FAN resin US 155mm "Long Tom" Crew sets of 4 Figures each..? I'm anxious to see what this kit will look like, since TAMIYA's new M10 and M4A3E8 "Easy Eight" are proving to be real "winners"!

As an aside, TAMIYA is re-releasing their old 35039 M3 Lee, and 35042 M3A1 Stuart kits. Presumably, with NO changes made to the kits themselves, seeing that their Stock #s remain the same as previously. It would be VERY NICE indeed, if TAMIYA were to release ALL-NEW kits of the above-mentioned kits- After all, they DID with their new M10 and "Easy-Eight", as they made these two reeeally BAD kits back in the 1960s, along with their old M36 Jackson. Their old M8 HMC (75mm Howitzer) could also stand to be re-done as an "all-new" kit. I wouldn't count on TAMIYA to re-do their M5A1 Stuart, as AFV CLUB has the edge on that one, but you NEVER KNOW, with TAMIYA...

I'm betting that TAMIYA will do very well with a new M40.

I beg to differ. Their own M40 could be accurate, unlike the AFV Club one.

I don't have the AFV CLUB kit- Maybe you're right- BUT! TAMIYA DID re-box several other ITALERI kits, so who's to say that they wouldn't re-box an AFV CLUB kit? I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. When TAMIYA announced their "new" M24 Chaffee, I was wondering how good that kit would be, but when I found out that it was just a re-boxing of the old and moldy ITALERI M24, I lost all enthusiasm over the TAMIYA M24. ACADEMY is re-boxing AFV CLUB kits, with a few minor changes- The AFV CLUB M41, and the ROK version of the M35 6x6 Truck, which is also an AFV CLUB kit, come to mind. ACADEMY's M47 is an older ITALERI kit.

AFV CLUB's M40 may not be the greatest, but neither was ITALERI's M24, and TAMIYA went ahead and re-boxed it anyway.

Pawel, I WILL say this: I would rather see an all-new M40 from TAMIYA, than a re-boxing of the AFV CLUB kit, taking you at your word, (and experience,) that the AFV CLUB M40 is inaccurate. And THAT is assuming that TAMIYA's M40 will be as nice, AND accurate as their new M10, and their M4A3E8 kits...

An all new M40 by Tamiya would be outstanding. The barrel on the AFV Club M40 has to be the most inaccurate barrel ever made in a modern plastic kit. Especially when you consider it is an artillery piece. Hope this subject becomes reality.

Agree...


Only the pilot model of the M40 saw combat in WWII, at the same time as the M26 went into combat (as part of the Zebra Mission). The first major combat of the production M40 was Korea. Hopefully that means late war/Korea uniforms.

Hopefully with T-80 or T-84 tracks instead of the T-66 . That was my big issue with AFV club's M-40

Me too! My dad served in an M43 battalion and I've always wanted to do a plastic kit of that vehicle.

Do you think Tamiya might be doing a few Korean War releases? Say their M4A3E8 with the other tracks to coincide with a Korean War M40?

By the way there was more than one M40/M43 that served in World War II. They readily switched the tubes back and forth between the 155 and 8 inch because they wanted weight of shell over range.

It's indeed possible as Tamiya's M4A3E8 was labeled as a "European Theater" variant and reviewers have noted that the kit already had attachment points for parts found in Korean War Easy-Eights.

Perhaps Tamiya also plans to release a new-tool Korean War T-34 to boot.
