I'm looking to build a simple (nothing crazy) kit bash of "Ron" AKA "Fury" the Bovington museum M4A2E8 that stood in as an M4A3E8 for the upcoming WW2 film. I was wondering if any one would be kind enough to share walk around pics of this vehicle. The movie stills are not very good since they focus on crew members and always seem to keep parts of the tank disguised. TIA

I'll be using the DML orange box Korean M4A3E8 105mm flame tank as my main donor kit. I intentionally bought it just for the tracks and suspension ($23 whopping bucks). Then I discovered that the old high bustle turret with cheek armor isn't half bad so that was a bonus plus the marine figs are nice too. I'll be using the tub, PE, suspension, and all the needed A2 parts that are already included in the kit sprue A! I've already built the rear engine access plate and exhaust deflector from those parts. I swapped the upper hull with my PTO A2 to get correct rear overhang angle (that kit will become an Iwo Jima A3 with wood armor). I'm missing a 76mm turret but might be getting one in trade soon. The only after market will be the AFV T-84 tracks and a metal barrel.

I'm not waiting for the turret to start the build as I'd like to have this one done before the movie releases here Oct 17th. Like I said, simple, and easy bash. So before anyone mentions it, yes I'm aware the belly on the tub will have A3 patterns and I don't care. This thing will be bolted down on a small base anyways.

and so it begins...the yellow markings point to areas that had to be trimmed to get a proper fit on the hull and the deflector. got the A2 details on the rear hull plate, note that the bottom will remain M4A3E8 as I will be bolting this down on a base.

Typical DML FDA mods here, it's impossible to get a square fit on these tranny covers without using shims to get the proper spacing. It'll all get filled in and reinforced soon, this is to glued down yet.

Oh, I also replaced the guides that where built into the tub and used the ones provided in sprue A they have better detail and allowed me to make the corrections. Also the final drive covers have been replaced using a spare set of Tamiya ones for a proper size and angle fit, the joint will not be visible but the small cover would've been obvious from the front. The alignment of the axles was not affected because the new covers just go around. Them..

Hi Nick,

No dio, this is the very poor mans version of what you're doing, just a tank on a base. You're doing top of the line expensive Tasca kits with aftermarket resin stowage etc. I hope to make one like yours later on so I'm really interested to study your pics to see how you arranged stowage etc.

Here I'm just throwing something against the wall to see what sticks. This is just a collection of bits and pieces from spares and a donor kit with only plans to add a metal barrel and aftermarket T-84 tracks.

I'll probably just hand paint the name on the barrel to the best of my abilities so don't go getting high expectations

I just want to represent the real star of the film, "Ron" the tank that plays "FURY"

Nick, the third photo illustrates my point. When the DML PTO kit first came out, I bought two. I built the first PTO kit OOB. The plan was to convert this one into an M4A3. That's why I shaved off the grouser covers. This hull had already been built up with a full complement of M4A3 engine deck and rear hull plate etc. the turret was finished too. Then I found out that the rear hull angle is not suited for an A3 and this went back in its box until now. Keep in mind that the DML late M4A3 75mm had not been released when all of this was going on.

So this is a salvage job, I took the kit apart without breaking anything and then by placing the hull from the orange hobby kit inside that box, now I will be able to build a more accurate A3 with the rest of the PTO kit.

The grouser covers will either be replaced on this one or I'll simply cover this area up with stowage items.

Thanx Russ, how did that M-51 turn out in the end. It's been a while but I remember you had some issue with the paint or something.

a small update:

I got the FDA braced from the inside using an upside down L bracket. The yellow arrows point to all the mods. because the front fit so nice and snug I didn't need to add another tub support in the front, only in the middle. the rear is adjusted into position by the deflector attachment. I'll post a pic of that too.

at this point the top hull is not glued to the bottom but I can still pick it up from either upside down or right side up without it falling apart.

here is a photo of it just sitting, the yellow area highlights the small seam that will close a lot further once I glue it down into place and weigh it down with a small book or something.

the side arrow highlights the filled in seams on the FDA sides and also the addition of the bolts. The bottom arrows highlight the addition of the towing and stepping brackets.

LOL, can't say I didn't call it in the original post. Nick, I'm building an M4A2E8, specifically "Ron" the real star behind the upcoming WW2 tank film FURY. The engine deck is A2 and so is the rear hull plate, the bottom I could care less about, I know it's A3 but nobody will see it once its bolted down on it's base. It's the only DML tub i know of that's designed for the HVSS suspension, that's why I'm using it. Thanx for looking.

The yellow lines show glued contact areas with the upper hull, the red lines show where the tube support pushes the lower hull sponson bottoms out to meet the upper hull.

Sounds great, I'm keen to compare finished models. I think I was just lucky and in the right place at the right time to pick up bits and pieces for my tank/dio. I don't think il be using the Bravo 6 figures, instead mix n match a few kits, only because I'm trying to set a different scene than the bravo 6 figures depict, although they look bloody awsum. Keep up the great work.

Thanx Nick,

Is it okay if I post a link to your build here? I think it might be a good idea for folks that are entertaining one of these builds. The threads are complimentary of one another as they show a different approach to a similar theme. Low skill and cost (me) vs high skill high cost (you). Something for everyone:)

Yeah, I stripped the whole thing and re-shot it. It was coming out way too "chipped" looking and all I wanted was a filter. This is the best pic I have of it, need to get some better pics taken....

I'm about to use the lower hull and running gear for an M1 Super (M4A1E8/76) during the Six Day War, off a pic of one in Jerusalem (I think, need to find the pic) so I'll have an extra M51 turret around for that M51 on a welded hull I've been thinking about....
I'd be interested in the link to the other movie tank you're talking about, too.

Russ,

That's amazing, I remember when you had to strip that down I was dreading your beautiful build was kaput. Talk about going through the fire, that's an impressive resurrection right there. I haven't heard back from Nick but I'm certain he'd be okay with me posting a link to his build here. I'll put that up soon as I get it.
