Does anyone (Gino?) know what exactly Trumpeter mean by "early" and "late" versions of M198 howitzer? What time period would their "early" kit available now be suitable for?

I don't know all the changes, but I believe it would be an early to late '80s version out of the box. 18Bravo (I think) posted a link in the M198 Review thread that list them. Most were minor; like new tires, various gussets added for strength, better positioning of recuprator and air pressure gauges, etc. Outwardly, they look pretty much the same throughout their use and up until today.

This is a technical report on the M198 Product Improvement Program. According to it, the early version is broadly suitable between 1984 and 1991 when the first PIP kits began being fielded. I believe the M198 PIP later became the M198A1.

On the LOGSA website, you can dowload TMs for both variants :
TM 9-1025-211-34 for the early model
TM 9-1025-211-34P for the late model

Frenchy, how are you searching the LOGSA site? I can't past the various security protocols. I opened up the pdfs and then went to try and browse the website and now I can't open either because of security issues.

In fact each time I go there (I've bookmarked this site a long time ago) there's a warning message from Windows telling me that I should not go further (something to do with a "security certificate" not being valid) but I 've already downloaded dozen of TMs without any problem ...Maybe I could do it for you if need be

Yeah, it was giving me that error before, which is common when trying to view even publicly available US government websites in the post 9/11 world. You can generally get around what is still available to the public, but it was giving me a new type of error. Maybe I'll try again later, I can't even bring up the LOGSA front page now.

You have to be careful about what TM's you attempt to look at. Without a username and password you can only look at TM's marked as Class A. All others are considered "Sensitive But Not Classified".
You could also be running into the expired SSL certificate as well.

Thanks for all the answers! So I guess the early version is suitable for ODS if first upgrade kits appeared in 1991.
BTW, I received my M198 "early" kit today and it looks really great in the box!
