The Third Battle of Ypres — better known as Passchendaele — was one of the most gruelling campaigns of the First World War. Fought between July and November 1917 by the Allied forces against the German Empire, the battle raged across the ridges south and east of Ypres in West Flanders, Belgium. Endless rain and relentless artillery turned the battlefield into a sea of mud, leaving an indelible mark on history.
