Introduction:
Military combat vehicle crews often use tree branches to enhance their vehicle concealment. This foliage camouflage helps the vehicle merge with their surroundings thus reducing the possibility of detection by enemy forces.
RT Diorama recently offered several 3D printed sets depicting camo foliage. After the report on the company’s coniferous branches sets (link), this review deals with their oak tree branches.
Review:
Oak Tree Branches (Camo Foliage) from RT Diorama is available in both 1/35 and 1/16 scale. The sets come in sturdy cardboard boxes (18,5 x 13,5 x 5 cm).
1/35 scale:
First, this review will focus on the 1/35 scale set (Art.No.:35473).
The box contains a 3D printed plate with several layers bubble wrap securing the delicate pieces, as well as short instructions on how to work with 3D printed parts.
The pieces are printed in grey resin and are located on a large printing plate, with raised side supports for extra protection. One of the supports broke in transport, but as far as I can tell, no branches suffered any damage. The printing attachments are all located on the bottom side of each branch and should be removed using sharp pointed side cutters. I cleaned several branches from the printing plate and I can confirm the process is not as difficult as it may seem at first… patience is the key as the delicate pieces would not tolerate manhandling. The instructions on working with 3D printed parts can help in the process.
The pieces are superbly delivered and printed to the highest possible standard. The magnified image shows the details well… the branch structure, the leaf shape… these really are miniature 1/35 scale oak tree branches. Very impressive!
The 1/35 scale set consists of 20 branches, designed in slightly different shapes and forms, so no two pieces are identical. The printing plate also includes various small twigs as an addition. These can be glued to the branches to get even more variation to the set.
Interestingly, the branches are not too rigid and can be bent a bit to conform to the vehicle. A single 1/35 scale set should be enough to camouflage a smaller vehicle, while those opting to provide more greenery to their models could always get additional sets. RT Diorama produced a video to explain how to apply the branches as foliage camouflage: link.
1/16 scale:
Now for the 1/16 scale set (Art.No.:16211).
As with its smaller scale counterpart, this set also consists of a 3D printed plate with branches and an instruction leaflet.
The set consists of 10 branches designed in slightly different forms.
The tree bark pattern on the branches is visible in this scale, as well as the detail of midrib and veins on some of the oak leaves.
Conclusion:
RT Diorama’s Oak Tree Branches (Camo Foliage) sets offer highly detailed, 3D-designed and printed branches ideal for enhancing vehicle models or diorama groundwork. The 1/35 scale set includes 20 intricately crafted branches, each in its unique shape and form, featuring sharply defined oak leaf details. Thanks to their flexibility, the branches can be easily adapted for use as camo foliage draped over military vehicles.
