12-Pounder Napoleon Cannon

The 12-pounder Napoleon Model 1857 was the principal artillery piece used in the American Civil War by both sides. Developed in France in 1853, the "12" in the name in fact refers to its calibre rather than the weight of the round.

Although with a clear heritage in the artillery that went before it, being a cast bronze cannon, it actually represented innovation in that it could fire ball and canister shot as well as shells.

These two examples, identifiable as Federal weapons due to their muzzle swell, are on display at the City of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery in Wyoming.
