On Friday 18 May 2007 Jürgen Nirschl and I set off for Athens, to participate on the figure competition of the “Star Club Athens”. After a 2,75 hour flight from Germany we were met at Athens airport by some of our Greek friends. From this first moment we were made to feel the special warmth of the Athenians, which stretched through the whole weekend.
On reaching the city limits, our driver humorously said "Welcome to the Hell". For us tourists the Athenian city traffic appeared to be really chaotic, but our driver was completely calm and drove us to our first destination: the hotel.
After a two-hour respite we, along with the other international guests, were taken by coach the exhibition. The competition took place on the first floor of a local gallery. In the ground floor there is a cafe where one can buy drinks and snacks.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed by close friends in the traditional Greek manner (three kisses), we put our figures on the shelves. This took us a bit longer than expected - one of us was permanently involved in conversations!
Once all the figures had been entered, the competition was officially opened in the backyard of the gallery, which coincidentally featured a very generous refreshment bar. After chatting to many, many people we were eventually driven back to the hotel for some very welcome sleep at about midnight.
