To the Heart of Romeo

A pleasant twist to the tale… before it even begins!

After being given the opportunity to meet the staff of Pegaso, just some of the people that are so important to the world of miniatures, and after sharing this beautiful experience in the subsequent article, “A Visit to the Heart of Pegaso”, I was determined to do a similar article for Romeo Models.

Often referred to as the “sister” company of Pegaso Models, Romeo Models began as the solo project of Lorenzo Romeo. With that tight bond with Pegaso, it has not taken Romeo Models long to establish themselves as one of the top brands amongst historical miniatures.

Initially my plan was to enter the Catania CSMS Competition in December 2006, and then pay a visit to Romeo Models, for purposes of this article. Then, in summer, the project was given an interesting spin – for the better.

In the summer of 2006 Lorenzo Romeo decided to take a week long vacation on Greece’s Ios Island on the Aegean Sea – my home. Naturally I was more than happy to arrange everything for Lorenzo and his lovely wife, Katerina, so they could make the trip to Athens and then Ios Island.

We spent a very nice week on Ios, with lots of fun and modelling, communicating with each other in the strangest mix of English, Italian, Greek, and Russian. The result was a strengthening of our friendship, and surprisingly a call from CSMS (Centro Siciliano Modellismo Storico), after talking to Lorenzo, to be a judge in December’s competition. And so, I began to prepare for my visit to Catania - from summer to December.

And so, having now painted the picture of the origins of this article, I now share another beautiful experience with you, “To the Heart of Romeo”.

But first, I am honoured to share a brief interview with Lorenzo Romeo with you.

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
