Torsten It´s Mengs Leo 2 A4. I´ve sent an email to both the retailer and to Meng. Hopefully they have a solution.

Dan, now I understand. But it's no US weapon. Tamas is right, it's a belgian made FN-MAG machine gun, used by the Royal Belgian, Royal Dutch and Austrian Army, beside many, many others in so many different versions. But I think the US awarded a licence to produce them on their own.

Tamas, I like that camo a lot. It gives us scale model builders another nice version to build. Will your PzH 2000 get the same camo?

Freddy, good luck for your query. It would surprise me, if they don't help you for free. Did you recently buy this kit or has it "ripened" in your stash?

There are neither photos nor any written information about them, but as it is “the official camo of the HDF” all future vehicles might have it. At least the tanks and IFVs. Actually the Nurol-Makina Elder Jalcin wheeled vehicles were on display last year with a very similar camo. But that camo was more usual (two main colors and two supporting others like on the MERDC scheme, or so).
Atthe moment I am still dealing with the Trumpeter campaign but near to finish. Once done, I will start building a Leopard. Depending on the amount of reference pics and time left from the campaign this might be a 2A4HU or a Polish 2A5. Only time will tell...

I know about the 240s history as I’ve used it quite a bit in my former job.

Torsten, been on the shelf for almost a year. I should have checked the box content but I never do that. This is the first time ever that parts are missing, and I have been building on and off since 1987...

But hopefully Meng or the retailer can help me out!

My 2A4GR is not yet standing in front of the Presidential Palace but it's already driving through the suburbs of Athens ....

There are still a few things missing like the MG 3 and the towing cables but the major work is done now. Next step will be attaching the decals (yes, there are stencils!), then comes the final matt varnish and painting the rear lights. Final step should be adding the antennas from Modellbau Schatton with a small greek flag. Everything should be done by next weekend.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Alrighty! Time to call this one done. I know... it's missing the MG3 and mount as well as the tow cables. The MG 3 went missing. And with it, went my mojo. I tried to wrestle the steel tow cables into place but they resisted... and I didn't want glue blobs all over the place.

I tried a lot of new things weathering wise, and I think I'll have some great new techniques to use on wartime panzers.

Anyway... photos:

I put a lot of extra effort into the tracks. I used brown and blue washes to get a scrubbed look where the rubber road wheels met the steel. I think it's an effect I'll stick with. The yellow mud was made with acrylic paint mixed with modelling paste and stippled into place.

A special thank you to Torsten for organizing and providing motivation for the campaign.

Your Leo looks fantastic, Gary! Don't worry about the MG. As far as I remember we didn't use it when we were on our local training ground. But maybe you can add the towing cables later. It's always good to have them on board. I remember we have used them once to tow a recon Leopard 1 from the PzAufklBtl 3 out of the mud. That was in early 1986 ....

As I said before the weathering looks just right for a used and well maintained modern tank. I especially like the way you weathered the tracks. Looks very realistic. Congrats for finishing your build and thank you for taking part in this campaign! As I see you've already added photos in the campaign gallery, so John's 2A4M CAN doesn't feels so lonely in there any more.

I have just finished decaling on my 2A4GR. Okay it was just an hours work with 12 pieces. Nothing compared to my aircraft models. I think I can finish this campaign for me until next weekend.

Have fun!

Great news from MENG! They will replace the missing E-sprue for my Leo 2A4. Hopefully it will arrive within the coming weeks and then I´m back at full speed in the campaign

Great to hear that, Freddy! So, you'll soon be back on the track(s) then.

A few days ago I've got these books from an inheritance. They are really fantastic! The book on the left side is from 1981 with all the prototypes and how they tested them and the one on the right side is from 1986, so right from my active time. It includes not only the german Leo 2 but also the dutch and the swiss, which is called Panzer 87 there.

Look at the price! It's still in Deutsch Mark! For 8,50 DM, which equals about 4,25 Euros today, you'll never get it anymore. I think today these books will cost between 10 and 15 Euros per piece if you still get them ....

Okay folks, time to wrap this build up. Yesterday I painted the last matt coating and this morning I added the antennas, a small flag and did a tiny little bit of weathering to break the brightness of the colours. It was made with some grey and green pastel chalks to show a bit of street dust all over but not too much.

Kampfpanzer Leopard 2A4GR, Hellenic Army, Athens, October 2005

.... of course the exhaust stacks have to be really black of all the diesel clouds as this 2A6 from the Koninklijke Landmacht shows impressively ....

One of the towing cables has a little crack as you can see, I will try to change it later.

Happy modelling!

Hi Gary,

Your tank looks great. Do not mind the MG3 missing but let me please advise adding the towing cable. You will than feel a complete build rather than think about it any time in the future when you look at the tank on your shelves.
I have such fever whenever a 99.9% completed model I see on my shelves...

Congrats to the work!

Hi Torsten

Very nicely weathered tank. The first time I read this topic, it was strange to know that the Hellenic Army is equipped with the 2A4s and your tank is nicely representing them.
One suggestion (if I may to suggest): paint the main gun barrel inside matt black. It looks grey plastic on your photo with the barrel’s business end facing to the camera. I usually drill them completely (if no metal barrel was used) to ensure no dummy look.

The exhausts look cool!

Cheers,
Tamás

Thanks Tamas! In fact the plastic is Dark Green as most older Revell kits are. It's just the flash which makes it look Grey. But you're right, that is something I can easily change with a few drops of paint.

Greece had the chance to get 183 Leopard 2A4 from a Bundeswehr surplus in 2005. Before that their tanks were the much older M 47, M 48, M 60 and AMX 30 plus some Leopard 1A5, so the Leopard 2 was quite an improvement for them. The first Leopard 2HEL, which is a version of the 2A6, were introduced in 2008. Most of them are build in Greece.

Happy modelling!

Hi for all,

Yesterday I could start building my Leo 2 version: it is the Revell Leopard 2A5/2A5NL kit in 1/35 scale. There was a slight chance to build a 2A4HU version as there are plenty of photos available by now (including 148 pics taken by a well-know Hungarian expert) but because there are no decals available yet for the Hungarian tanks, I decided to build a Polish version as I have purchased earlier a set of Polish decals from Toro Models.

Due to the short campaign time-frame it is unlikely to have the 2A4HU decals showing up on the market, even though there is a Hungarian decal manufacturer (and I am pretty sure they are already designing it :-)

Btw he photo does not contain all sprues, wheels and extras due to the available space on the table...

Anyway, back to my kit. A little bit of progress done so far because the hull has many fit issues which were hard to wrestle with. Finally I could get it together but serious amount of filling was required on the bottom and will be required on the top edges, too.

One positive point: Revell guys were smart enough to design two internal walls inside the hull: one in front of and one after the turret opening so the huge turret will not deform the hull in time (as it does on the Meng 2A4 kit, as I heard).

I also cut off the wheels from the sprue and will clean them up in the coming days. Apart from the Toro decals, I have other extras too: a Voyager PE set (designed for the Tamiya kit, though), main gun barrel from the Leopard Club and workable tracks from Trumpeter. I also ordered Hataka paints for the Polish AFV's 2014 scheme, which is slightly lighter in green and brown like the NATO standard is.

I am sure it will be a good fun to deal with this kit.

Good to see that you've started your build, Tamas! I've updated the roll call on page 1. With your 2A5PL there's another Leo-Nation on the way in this campaign. Very good!

You will have an easy game with the Revell kit. I didn't had any real difficulties with mine. Please let us know, when there are decals on the market for a 2A4HU. I'm sure that camo will be very interesting to see on a model. Can you give us a link for the photos you spoke of or are they not available on the internet?

I have one more kit of that Revell 2A4 and I'm tending more and more to build as one of the Österreichisches Bundesheer (Austrian Armed Forces) because of its easy camo. But not now, not this year ....

Hi Torsten,

Yes, this is the 2014 paint scheme of the Polish version.

I am awaiting for the decals to market as all other stuff is in the stash already (Meng kit and related ET Models PE set as well as two extra main gun barrels, FN MAG set and brass antennas.

The link is here

Actually almost every Hungarian modelers have the 2A4HU on the top of “next project” list. So do I.

I am currently trying to identify the colors as every photo shows something different shade due to light, camera, photo angle and all other factors. But I think those four colors can be identified to RAL codes. The yellowish is surely a BW official desert color (whichever it is).

The biggest question is the grey/blue one as many photos show it grey, others show blue. I think it is RAL 7012 basalt grey. Others might be RAL 7013 NATO olive and RAL 6031 NATO green.

I might be mistaken. Any good ideas are more than welcome!

Hi Torsten et al,

I just talked to the owner of HAD Models in Hungary. He told me that the decal will be released by mid August and can be purchased via his webshop:

https://www.hadmodels.com/tcslista/decals/135-vehicles_87201

Suggested to occasionally check the site for availability.

Cheers,

Tamás

The campaign looks really good so far. Thanks to all who have posted!

I thought that this might be the spot to ask the Leo 2 question.
How many links per track run?
I've got the Border Models Leo2 A5/A6 kit and they forgot to tell you how many links. This is a nice kit though!
Thanks and keep up the inspiring work !

BREAKING NEWS!

The Hungarian tank brigade (users of Leopard 2A4HU) has posted the "official color codes from KMW" of the special Hungarian camo.

http://tataidandar.hu/2020/08/06/kozkivanatra/

The webpage is in Hungarian but the very bottom has the RAL codes and a camo patch sample with a special note "every tank has a bit different patching" - this will allow to express one's "artistic skills", I think.

Percentages represent the coverage ratio of the specific color.
