This is a 54 mm figure from Spain’s El Viejo Dragon Miniatures (EVD) representing “Achilles. The figure is sculpted by Emilio Arredondo it is one of EVD’s latest releases in 2004.

The Pack

The figure is boxed in the latest style EVD pack with box art that shows the finished -- painted -- figure.

The figure

Inside the box we find a small plastic bag wrapped with a sheet of air bubble packing material which protects four pieces of white metal and one resin part. The box also includes a painting guide with additional historical notes for Achilles.

The figure itself is molded in one solid piece. There is a small part for the middle of the arm protector and one piece for the sword, with the right hand molded on it. The shield is a separate piece with the left hand molded on , grabbing it. The last piece is a small resin base, but nothing special

The casting is nicely done ,and from an initial inspection it appears some minor filling will be need along with some cleaning of mold lines in areas that shouldn‘t damage sculpted details. EVD keeps improving their in sculpting, quality and packing , but I think its still not up to the same level as Andrea and Pegaso. But this figure is also less expensive than offerings from those companies .

The pose of Achilles is a calm, with him standing and looking far away.

This figure sure looks like “Brad Pitt /Achilles” from the recent “Troy” motion picture. I think that the facial similarity is more than evident , so EVD had a success.
EVD isn’t the only company offering recently-released 54MM figures of Achilles, so there are number of different options to choose from.

Overall the sculpting is good with a detail level that is satisfying.
When it comes to painting, only a few colors will be needed and builders may be keen on showing off the bronze armor parts and the leather of the soldier. Some may also try to enhance the Brad Pitt characteristics (if that’s an aim). This may pose some challenges to less experienced painters, but those with a bit of experience shouldn’t have many problems.

Conclusion

An overall good choice for painters that like movie characters.
Recommended.

I started modelling 27 years ago with some 1/72 planes and military vehicles. Soon the diorama bug got into me and with Sheperd Paynes books I dug in. I loved to build dioramas and military vehicles till the Vietnam Era. I don't like modern stuff so much. 4 years ago I had a crush on figure painti...
