Warpigs Acrylic based washes

Introduction
Okay, I have always made my own 'washes' using oil paint and odorless turpentine. Always seemed easy enough. When I started seeing pre-bottled washes on the market I thought it was a waste of time and money. But my washes were always hit or miss. Sometimes they worked perfectly and sometimes not. Nonetheless, oils and turps were messy at best. Enter to the market place Acrylic based washes. One of the recent offerings comes from the Modelers Warehouse under the brand name of "Warpigs Wash"
The Set
The washes come in three colors, WP-001: Black Wash, WP-002:Brown Wash and WP-003: Gray Wash. They are sold individually or as a set. They come in 2 fl.oz. bottles with the instructions printed on the back.
Warpig's Wash is a non-toxic, acrylic based 'sludge wash'. The instructions are simple: apply it to any painted surface, let dry, remove excess with a damp cloth. All colors can be mixed or applied in multiple applications for a darker shade.
The Test
I used three road wheels from a King Tiger to see how this product worked. The road wheels were all painted Panzer Yellow. As you see in photo No.1 each wheel is in front of the respective color used.
An observation: for some unknown reason the black wash dried probably 5 full minutes faster than the other two colors. Black was completely dry in 3 minutes. Brown was completely dry in 10 minutes. Grey was completely dry in 14 minutes. As you can see they all dry quickly so your work is minimally disrupted due to drying time. I already like this as normally my turpentine based wash has to be force-dried or sit for 12 hours to be completely dry. Photo No.2 shows the wheels with the washes dry prior to removal of excess material. Photo No.3 shows the finished product.
If you are careful, and depending on how many washes you apply, you should be able to get several models per bottle of this product.
SUMMARY
Highs: Ease of application and workability.Good color intensity.Colors are 'mixable' allowing for many subtle combinations. Good for Armor weathering or making panel lines on A/C dark
Lows: A bit pricey at $7.00 per container individually. (or $18.00 for the set)Opaque container doesn't allow you to see if contents are mixed properly (instructions are to 'shake well before use')
Verdict: All in all I am impressed with the ease of use, color intensity and fast work time. I imagine on a larger piece such as a turret you will spend a little time (as you would with a traditional wash)

Great review Charles! I had the same mentality; these would be a waste of money, because I can make my own. However, I like the points you brought up; quick drying time and consistent color. Thanks for the review.
