about the figure
The Kingdom of Naples was an informal name of the polity officially known as the Kingdom of Sicily which existed on the southern Italy after the secession of the island Sicily from the old Kingdom of Sicily after the Sicilian Vespers rebellion on 1282 against the rule of Angevin King Charles I of Naples, who had taken the control of the island with Papal support on 1266. It comprised the present regions of Campania, Abruzzi, Molise, Basilicata, Apulia and Calabria. Naples was the capitol.
Giacchino Murat, Napoleons brother in law became King of Naples in 1808.
He strived for elegance and exhibitionism and his love of show flowed towards the uniforms of his army with particular attention to those of the Royal Guard. Initially the grenadiers uniforms were similar to those of Napoleons Imperial Guard , but they were soon to have their own characteristics, such as the amaranth red colour that stood out on the blue coats. In 1812 chest lapels were approved and it was also permitted to embellish the row of buttons with golden chevrons.
The figure RM 54-81 represents Standard Bearer Officer of Grenadier of Royal Guard of Kingdom of Naples.
The figure comes in 125 x 85 x 30 mm.standard Romeo Models light blue cardboard box. The front cover shows a photo of the painted figure painted from 3 different angles front and back for uniform details and flag emblem close-up.
Inside the box, there is an A4 paper sheet including historical info and painting instructions for this figure. This document is represented in 2 languages; Italian and English. Historical research is made by Lorenzo Romeo and text is translated to English by Riccardo Carrabino.
It is so good to see a thanks note to unforgettable Marcello Grimaldi. A very sensetive movement from Romeo Models.
Parts are well protected between two slabs of thick white polyfoam and figure base and resin flag are placed under the polyfoam not to damage the figure parts.
The figure is sculpted by Italian master sculptor Maurizio Bruno and made up of 8 white metal parts and a resin flag. All parts are cast clean and crisp in very good details. The figure has no need for a serious clean up, just brushing and sanding a few slightly visible moldlines will make it figure for priming.
The main part is torso with legs. He wears a dark blue coat with amaranth(reddish rose color) bib, high collars, cuffs and turn-ups of ends; all rowing are light blue, silver buttons or gold buttons with golden chevrons; epaulettes amaranth-gold-amaranth (triple coloured) with gold rows, ends and gorget. The left shoulder crosswise thick sash used as flag holder strap has tassles on both sides and is in amaranth color with golden fringes and embroidery. The details of the uniform are perect sculpt and cast. He wears white trousers and black under knee boots with gold edges.
Other parts are ;

Flag : Cast in resin in unbelieveable good details. It is called Flag Model 1811. A decree of 11 February 1811 established the regulations concerning the flags. There were only two equal models different only in dimensions, the smaller model was cm 85 x 78 the bigger was cm 118 x 114. Article one of the decree established the National colours of the Kingdom to be white, amaranth and sky-blue , article two established that the background of the flag was to be sky- blue, in the centre a coat of arms should be shown and the ends should have a double chequered edge with equal amaranth and white squares whit the sky-blue colour external to the chequered pattern, all embellished with gold fringes at the ends.
The front side shows two fronds of oak and laurel golden oil painted, fastened together by a golden strap on which there is written the following: (NG/al/ Reggimento / Granatieri a piedi/ della Guardia Reale).NG to the Regiment of foot grenadiers of the Royal Guard. All headed by the golden Royal Crown.
The reverse side of the flag shows: the coat of arms of the Kingdom headed by the Royal crown and framed by the collar of the Order of the two Sicilies. The sides are supported by two mermaids one holding an oar and one holding a cornucopia. In the coat of arms there is the Napoleonic eagle, the horse of Naples and the symbol of Trinacria. Fastened to the flagstaff there is also a sky-blue scarf with white-amaranth chequers and golden fringes.
Figure base : A simple round figure base with nice ground texture.
I am not a fan of this period but as I checked this figure for minutes to understand how these very small details can be sculpted and clean cast in such a scale. My personel congratulations to Maurizio Bruno and Romeo Models for such a beauty. A great figure to paint for the fans of period.
Very Highly Recommended
