The conquest by the Crusaders brought about the Christian reign of Jerusalem in the Holy Land. Many European knights transferred themselves to the region where many of the native populations were living under the Islamic religion. With the passing of a few generations,the European Knights soon adopted local uses and clothing generating a fusion of cultures. It would not have been a rare sight during the centuries of Crusaders to observe Christian Knights wearing clothing and other items similar to Islamic foes. The Crusaders soon adopted local wear and garb in favour of thier traditional one due to the practicalities of the local clothing. The local wear was designed to suit the climatic conditions of the region- with larde expanses of desert,heat during the days and cool nights as well as furious sand storms. In 1259, the Hospitaller Knights of Saint John abandoned their entirely black traditional garments replacing them with a red surcoat but maintaining the white cross as a symbol of their Order. The transition between the change from the black to the red wear could be represented by a knight wearing a blackcloak from the old wear over a red surcoat representing their new wear.

Inside the box, there are 2 paper sheets including historical info about Crusader Knights in Holy Land and painting instructions for this figure. This document is prepared by Marco Guillani
and presented in 4 languages; English, Italian, French and German.
Parts are well protected between two slabs of thick gray polyfoam and small parts are secured in a punched plastic bag.
The figure is sculpted by Gianni La Rocca
and made up of 10 white metal parts. Casting of all parts is clean, crisp and very well detailed. There is only a slightly visible seamline on the outer side of the cloak and a small excess metal to clean on the inside of cloak. No more need for a serious clean up, filling or sanding. As always ; keep in mind that brushing metal figures with a wirebrush and then washing with a mild detergent or soap make details more apparent and priming makes paint adhere much better on metal figures.
The main part is torso with cloak. He wears a textile tunic over his mail hauberk with sleeves. Over his tunic, he carries a cloak with hood. The cords of the cloak and ending of turban is molded over the tunic and are well defined. The right hand posed to put on waist is also molded together with this part. The belt buckle, folds of the tunic,cloak and hood are well represented. One of the best details on this figure is the perfectly sculpted Cross stitched over knight's heart. This can be considered as a great help for the painters who are having problems to add a cross on a painted tunic.
Other parts are ;
Left leg : Chainmail, folds on skirts of surcoat, holes and buckle of sword belt are well defined. The sword fits well to the hole on the left thigh. He carries prick spurs tied with leather straps over his ankle height shoes
Right leg : It makes a good fit to the left leg .The details are also well defined in this part. The hole on the right thigh makes the dagger assembly easier. Another nice touch on this part is the small cross attached to the belt with leather laces.
Head : He wears a helmet with a cross shaped nose guard. Turban, an Asian origin headdress consisting of a long scarf which comes in many shapes, sizes and lengths, is wrapped over his helmet . Facial details, moustache,beard and the folds of Turban are well defined. There is a cross shaped hole on the forehead of the figure to make the noseguard assembly easier and a good fit.
Left hand : He wears leather gloves over his mail hauberk with sleeves. It makes a good fit to the mound on the left side of the cloak and by the help of this fit; the arm can easily be posed to hold the top of the battle axe.
Battle axe : He carries a Danish-Viking style battle axe which is commonly used by Crusaders and named as Crusader axe. Though both axes look similar, the difference is the lenght of the handle. Viking battle axe handles are about 20 inches, but Crusader axes are quite longer with a lenght of 37 inches.
Sword in scabbard : As the secondary weapon, he carries a sword with short crossguards and half-disc pommel on the hilt.
Dagger in scabbard : He also carries a dagger with a simple hilt in leather scabbard.
Noseguard : It is supplied as a seperate part in the kit and it makes a good fit to the cross shaped hole on the forehead of the figure. Front rivets of the helmet are represented on the noseguard. Giving the noseguard as a seperate part makes the painting of facial details much easier for the painter.
Figure base : Ground texture is well defined and a few small rocks add realism to the base. The holes on the base make a good fit to the figure legs and note that these holes can also help you when you assemblying the two legs together. Apply epoxy metal on both legs, attach together, hold both for a short while, insert legs to the holes and let them dry.
