Introduction

Known as one of the ugliest SMGs ever designed, and yet also one of the most beloved by its users; Owen gun was an Australian submachine gun designed by Evelyn Owen in 1939. It was the only entirely Australian-designed and constructed service submachine gun of World War II and was used by the Australian Army from 1943 until the mid-1960s.

The Owen SMG is a 9mm calibre magazine-fed blowback-operated submachine gun. The magazine is inserted overhead and uses offset sights. The receiver has a section that separates the bolt from the cocking handle, preventing dirt from entering the receiver. If dirt did get into the weapon, it would congregate at the rear through a small drainage hole. The firing pin was machined into the face of the bolt. The ejector was built into the magazine.
Review

  • Kit comes well packed in standard light brown cardboard box with an illustration showing different types of SMG in front cover. Back covers show a drawing on how to assembly photoetched parts for Owen Gun and L1A1 SLR. Inside the box, resin parts are represented with easy to remove casting blocks and inserted into a zip-lock bag. PE parts are secured in another bag.

  • SMG is sculpted in 1/35 scale by Vladimir Demchenko and cast in resin. Quality is over standard as always and weapon details like trigger housing, barrel, magazine receiver and wooden butt are well defined.

  • Kit includes 4 submachine guns and the magazines are given as seperate parts. SMGs are served in 2 types with different wooden stocks marked as A and B.

  • A photoetched fret is given inside kit. It includes gunslings, buckles, sling svivel assembly parts and bayonets for Owen SMG and L1A1 SLR. How to guide over kit is helpful for the identification and assembly of the PE parts.
    Conclusion

Another useful kit from BRAVO-6 for existing and upcoming Royal Australian Regiment figures.
