Introduction

From what I have been able to find out about the Dragon M50 .50 Cal it is a superior weapon to the M2 .50 Cal being lighter, having a higher rate of fire and is more accurate at range. Despite these improvements I have been unable to verify any country using the Dragon M50 .50 Cal HMG as standard over the M2 .50 Cal due to the improvements not being exceptional in scope. I have found some videos of the weapon in use (trials I believe) and I have included them here for your viewing pleasure.

Review

This offering from Legend Productions is part of their now well known 3D mastering offerings in 1/35th scale. Legend Productions has provided this set as a replacement body for, I believe those modellers who wish to change an M2 .50 Cal for the Dragon M50 .50 Cal. I found it very difficult to find good reference on this weapon and for the most part it was restricted to video presentations made from 2007 -2011, and so I have to congratulate Legend Productions on finding decent reference for this scale offering of the Dragon M50.

This offering from Legend Productions provides two Dragon M50 bodies. The parts provided with this release include separate cocking lever of which you also get a spare, the handle grips are separate as we would now expect. The last inclusions are alternate option for the standard iron sights on the weapon; you get the option of the sights in place ready to engage or folded down for I believe the addition of an alternate sighting system.

The parts are all well moulded and free of any defects that I was able to pick up even under magnification. The muzzle of the HMG does ideally need to be drilled a little in order to provide an accurate look to that area. My sample had one set of the folded sights missing, but I would not be overly concerned about that as Legend Productions takes good care of their customers and will remedy that issue. While on the subject of the sights I was impressed at the finesse of the ring sights as they are open, but the very small rear iron sight will need a little flash cleaned up to show this very fine detail.

The product is packed inside of an end opening card cartons that Legend Productions uses for all of its smaller offerings and this is then sealed in a heat shrink plastic that keeps the packaging secure. Inside there is a single Ziploc bag containing all of the resin parts for this product. Despite this being free to move around inside the carton my set has no damage present despite being posted all the way from South Korea to the UK.

Conclusion

From what I can see this is a very accurate representation of the Dragon M50 from Legend Productions as part of their 3D range of products. I like how Legend Productions caught the intricate muzzle flash suppressor and the grooves in the barrel itself. The iron sights are also very well done in this set and I appreciate having the choice in their use. My only concern was my inability to find anything about this weapon being in use and I would appreciate any feedback on this subject from the membership.

Isn't the M3 used on the Avenger Stinger turret, or is that a different M3? The M3 is supposed to be lighter weight and have a faster firing rate than the M2HB.

I agree with you Darren: it's kind of critical that we as modellers and history buffs know something about the pretty new offerings before we make use of them. Sounds like the Dragon variant of Ma Deuce is still in trials pending evaluations and tentative possible acceptance. The Defense budget more than the effectiveness of the weapons system is actually the big concern here.

This is not the same gun. The M3 is the aircraft version of the M2 with a lighter barrel that has an air-cooled (perforated) sleeve. The M3 has also been in use since WWII on aircraft. "The M3-series is used by the U.S. military in two versions; the M3M and M3P. The fixed, remote-firing version, the FN M3P, is employed on the Avenger Air Defense System, and was used on the OH-58D...The M3M flexible machine gun has been adopted by USN under the designation GAU-21/A for use on helicopters. The GAU-21/A is also being used by the USMC to upgrade from the XM-218/GAU-16 .50 cal. machine gun for the CH-53E, on the UH-1Y Venom, and on the Canadian Forces' CH-146 Griffon via the INGRESS upgrade" M3P .50 cal. fixed, remote fire M3M .50 Cal flex mount, GAU-21

Thank you for the information and images Gino. I am now wondering if this weapon is used by anyone in any form. I do know that information on it is very hard to find beyond what looks like trials and promotional information.

I'm not a fan of new Legend products... They now became "Live Resin v2.0"...

I am aware that there are other sources for these items and the one you have mentioned has been in the business of providing this sort of item for longer. I myself I seeing competition as it keeps the prices down and availability better.

As far as I know the designer who worked for Live Resin now works for Legend, so it's not just a matter of competition - these new products are most likely based on these same source CAD files... Anyway, I don't mind such competition, but in my opinion the Legend portfolio has changed... In the past they released a lot of excellent conversions, update and accessory sets for armor models. Now they mostly release weapon sets - most, if not all, of which were already available earlier from LR...

I agree. Writing the news on Legend products for the site I noticed a dramatic change in the company scope. While I think it is great that another company is doing 3D stuff, I really miss Legend's larger conversions and upgrades. Don't get me wrong, I love Peter Samofalov's 3D work and hope for some of his more extensive releases appearing under Legend label. I just think there is still room for traditionally sculpted stuff in company's portfolio as well. Mario

Yes I also miss the mix of conversion and upgrade sets.
