Infantry Weapons and Chevrons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

Here we look at an offering from ICM that caused a stir when announced the Infantry Weapons and Chevrons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 1/35th scale.

Review

One of the releases that has garnered a lot of attention from ICM this year is the Infantry weapons and chevrons of the Armed Forces of the Ukraine. This release offers 7 sprues covering a huge selection of firearms going all the way back to WWII. You are also provided with a valuable resource in the form of a large decal sheet, covering the chevrons seen in use by current Ukrainian units in the current conflict.  An examination of the sprues provided reveals no obvious issues to concern yourself with, and the only thing I can think to caution you about is care during removal and clean up.

The weapons provided are as follows:

AKS-74 Assault Rifle with GP-25 Grenade Launcher

Assault Rifle “MALYUK” with Silencer

Assault Rifle “MALYUK”

Rather than list all of the Chevrons in this offering, I will restrict myself to saying there are 148 different decal forms. 18 different types of which are army shoulder straps, 5 patches with the flag of Ukraine, and 9 miscellaneous other patches.

Introduction

This introduction is as supplied by ICM:

The main burden of the full-scale war that began in February 2022 fell on the Ground Forces of Ukraine. These include mechanized, motorized infantry, mountain, tank, and artillery brigades. However, the most active participation in combat operations is seen from the Air Assault and Marine Infantry brigades, which often carry out missions in the most challenging areas. The Ukrainian defence forces have demonstrated their ability to fulfil necessary tasks with dignity and have become arguably the most combat-ready army in Europe with extensive combat experience. Small arms and anti-tank weapons play a significant role in the armament system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Infantry units currently deployed in combat heavily utilize domestically and Soviet-manufactured weapons. Among Ukrainian-made weapons, notable examples include the “Stugna” line of anti-tank missile complexes and the widely used “Fort” series pistols. Special forces employ the “Maluk” (also known as “Vulkan”) assault rifle. Additionally, there is increasing use of weapons acquired through international material and technical assistance.

Conclusion

I cannot recall any other weapons set that has been released thus far, that covers so many different options. Looking at all of these different weapons types being used by the forces of Ukraine I can only believe that logistics for provision of ammunition must be a nightmare, and one of the changes I would make is to reduce the number of variants in use to make logistics an easier proposition. With that said, this offering from ICM is stunning in its breath of options and attention to detail. Having looked closely at what is provided, I highly recommend that any modeller who dips their toes into post WWII military figures to pick up this set - if not several of them. As you will never find another set offering so many options in a single purchase.

(The broken part is my fault not the providers issue)
