Yahu is again releasing colour photo-etched dashboards in 1:35 scale, with the set YML3518 for the Sd.Kfz.9 Famo. In this case, it not only improves the kit part, but replaces it with a different model.
The difference is quite noticeable, as the dashboard is shorter and has controls on both sides of the steering wheel.
The reproduction quality is excellent. Despite the tiny size, the drawings and numbers are perfectly identifiable and, in some cases, even the text. The set also comes with a small placard that is sometimes seen on the left side of the hull.
The plate comes pre-painted in Dunkelgelb, but additional placards are also included in case you want to paint it in another colour, i.e. Dunkelgrau. Just be careful not to paint the tachograph, as there is no replacement for it.
The photo-etched is thicker than what we are used to, and requires a bit of work to cut, but considering the type of part it is, it is preferable this way as it is more rigid and looks better.
The Tamiya kit comes with an initial dashboard, extending from side to side with the dials to the right of the steering wheel, and tachograph and levers on the left. Keep in mind that this is an open top vehicle with this area being quite visible and Tamiya does not provide decals for the instruments, so they should be hand painted.
The Yahu set on the other hand corresponds to a later model, shorter and with the steering wheel in the centre. It was introduced in 1939.
The only photo I have seen shows the three small dials in black with white markings, so as the tachograph. It should not be too difficult to correct with a bit of paint.
Also, the base for the three levers for the throttle, hand starter and radiator louvers is not flat like the photoetch represents. But the Tamiya one, which is placed in a different position, although correct in shape is slightly oversized. Adding the levers to the photoetch black rectangle on the right should do the job, but you can add the half-cylinder shaped base for a better looking.
Apart from the fully colored dashboard, the set includes the three supports that attach it to the cabin. The fit is very good, so as the size and shape.
Conclusion
A more than welcome addition to Tamiya kit, providing a fully painted dashboard that catches the eye on an open-top vehicle like this.
