JUNGLE COMMANDOS - The Battle for Arakan, Burma, 1945 by Lucy Betteridge-Dyson - Osprey

Following the Battles of Kohima and Imphal, the tide was turning against the Imperial Japanese Army. In November 1944, the British Fourteenth Army embarked on a dramatic advance that would lead to the re-conquest of Burma. Yet this famous victory would not have been possible without another offensive taking place along the western coast in Arakan, where XV Corps and 3 Commando Brigade were tasked with trapping and destroying the Japanese 28th Army.

In a series of daring amphibious operations and deep-penetration missions into the Burmese jungle, Royal Marine and Army Commandos - alongside the men of the 25 and 26 Indian Infantry and the 81 and 82 (West African) Divisions - inflicted a devastating defeat on an enemy once thought unbeatable. Thrown into combat with scant resources in one of the harshest environments on Earth, they fought through jungle, mountain and mangrove terrain against a relentless foe, culminating in one of the bloodiest battles of the Burma campaign: the battle for Hill 170.

From amphibious landings on mangrove-swamped beaches to brutal close-quarters combat in the hills of Arakan, Jungle Commandos is a story of daring tactics, multinational cooperation, and the overlooked battles that helped secure the final Allied victory in South East Asia.
