TankFest 2012

  • move
Bovington Tank Museum hosts Tank Festival every year now but this was started in 2000 and used to be held every other year; however it proved to be so popular that it was made an annual event and this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. Held over the weekend of the 30th June/1st July this year is not a disappointment with a very large selection of military vehicles, both static and on the move ranging from World War One to the present day making the oldest vehicles on the move nearly 100 years old. In addition to the vehicles there was also a number of re-enactment groups also ranging from World War One to the 1980’s, with some of the combatants from World War Two being the best represented.

The day started overcast but eventually the sun made an appearance making the day all the better despite the wind. The event is well catered for with the smell of some very tempting food wafting around to attract your attention and a large selection of stalls to help open your wallet and of course a few stalls selling models (Tanks and models what else could I do). Unfortunately due to a previous obligation I was only able to spend 5 hours at the event but I have included a number of pictures here to give you an idea of what you can expect if you have the opportunity to attend one of these events in the future.

I have included a walk around for you on page four of this feature which I am sure Armorama will move to its own location in the future.

Darren Great set of photo's, looks like it was a great time. Maybe next year, I can figure a way to get over there to see it. Kevin

Thanks for the pics!! I'm heartbroken every time this event comes around and I can never afford to go. It looks like you had perfect weather for it, too.

There was a very large number of nations represented at the event judging by the languages I heard, even Canadians, Americans, and Australians (couldn't understand a word any of them said LOL). The event today was open until 9pm giving people plenty of time to wonder around.

Crikey Darren, You did well getting this on already. I've only just got back myself and haven't got round to loading the footage I took from my cmaera yet! Great to see the Tiger running again; after the arena display we were wandering around the tank park before they put them to bed, and they had a ladder against the Tiger, they were letting people up to look inside, I was the last man in the queue before they closed up - good luck or what!

Steve it was all pre arranged with James before I went on Saturday with the only complaint I can make being the walk back to the carpark and Mr Holland not being where he promised.

I was for most of the time Darren - you were probably looking for a scruffy bloke instead of a geezer in a smart blazer. I must admit I did spend some time wandering about looking at tanks etc, but that's what the day is all about, eh?

Ken most in that area had blazers on and I even asked several if they new you (bad news you are not well known ), part of the problem was I didn't know anything about you other than your name and unit 3 RTR.
