Sherman Advance - a modellers tale

  • move
Introduction

The 12th August is a significant date for me as it was the date I first dipped my toe into the world of on line modelling, the day in 2005 when I joined this site. This year brings me to a 5 year point and I thought I'd do this feature as a thank you to all those whom I’ve met both here and elsewhere to say thanks for all the input, help and advice.
The early years – 2005 to 2007

The early years consisted of a steep learning curve, some success some failure and a lot of fun. I learned that there were different types of Sherman’s and that building British kits was possible even though at that point there was still a limited range. I’ve seen the site change considerably from one forum to many subject specialist forums and grow steadily over the years.

I’ve met and made some excellent on line buddies, and been fortunate enough to have met a few personally and established some new and lasting friendships. I’ve seen the flame wars, personal fights and banter, but sure the world would be a boring place if we all agreed all the time. Above all I've seen the dedication and helpfulness of people who enjoy the hobby, try hard to influence developments and provide help and advice to many.

One signficient change for me towards the middle of 2007, and much to the relief of some (many), I finaly bought some backing card to take pictures on!

About Alan McNeilly (AlanL)

Then I had a long spell when I didn't build anything (too busy) and really just got started again during the summer of ...

Hiya Alan, Long time no speak, but I will admit that your collection is absolutely amazing and shows how dedicated you are, with not just the building, but the research, help to others and the other works that crop up so regularly on the site. I do not know how you manage to keep such a strong focus, what with the real world that must intervene, so as to keep on living. Fabulous mate............now you need to keep these shots and add the next gawd knows how many completed projects at you ten year anniversary. Yours Aye' John

Hi Chris, Many thanks and a I had nice one to fnish off with, in the Churchill and interior, so thank you for that. Hi John, Hello your goodself. Nice to hear form you again. I hope all is well with you and yours. John, the build list is long and getting longer all the time, so I should have enough to cover the next five years There has been such a mountain of new stuff these last 2 years it's hard to keep track. Work eats into the modelling time for sure, and the reviews and other stuff take up a bit more but fortunately or unfortunately SWMBO works Saturdays so once I've done my chores I can sometimes get a free run so to speak. The rest is an hour or two each evening to keep things progressing. Great to hear from you. Cheers guys Al

Hi Andrew, Many thanks for looking in and the comments. Always room for improvement, I'd like to do some more work on some of the early builds sometime, fix a few errors/omissions. There is always something lol, lol. Hope all is well with you. Cheers Al

Alan just dropped in from aeroscale to say congratulations on a super feature and a fantastic body of work..your collection would put that of most museums to shame .. (I've just come home after a day at Muckleburgh - it wasn't quite as good as I'd remembered it...) all the best Neil

Al, a superb body of work. My only suggestion would be to add a "crib sheet" identifying the various kits and upgrades used. I can figure some of that out, but I'm sure you'll have admirers who'll want to recreate some parts of your oeuvre.
