Boxer MRAV

The Boxer Multi Role Armoured Vehicle is a joint venture of the Dutch and German Defense industry, and is designed primarily to replace the older tracked AFV's (such as the YPR765 and M577, and various M113 and Fuchs1 types). Following the trend of multi-wheeled developments, the all wheel-drive, four wheel-steer Boxer has been designed as a Multi-role vehicle, through use of removable rear modules, which can be exchanged in under 30 minutes to. The Boxer can be turned into a Personal Carrier (carrying eight Infantry soldiers), Ambulance, Command and Logistics (transport) vehicle. Other options are a Recovery and a 120mm Mortar Carrier version. The Boxer is heavily protected by Modular Armour, which can be exchanged or upgraded by simply replacing the bolted panels. Internally the seats are suspended for additional crew protection. At a maximum weight of 33 tons, and a length of 7.88 meters and 2.99 meters wide, it is the largest wheeled AFV currently in production.

The model is an all resin kit from Vajra ( read the review here), which shows a German Command version of the Boxer. The Command version is externally distinguished by the double rectangular hatches in the module roof. The model is painted with Tamiya paints from the NATO range, and weathered lightly with MIG pigments. The base is a solid Oak plinth, with groundwork from Treemendus, and hanging basket liner for the scrubs.

This is a joint venture between the Dutch and German military to replace the various tracked AFV's (like the YPR 765) The Germans will take delivery from this year, and the Dutch will take delivery from 2011. The British government was initially involved in the scheme, but pulled out, and after comparison test decided to purchase a hotchpot of vehicles from all over the place... Henk

It's great to see different vehicles here other than tanks. Nice work Henk!

Thanks Jeff.

So this rig in many ways is like the Striker family. A basic rig that can be configured as need be.

I'll have to buy one of those in 2011 then, since I'm building some Dutch army vehicles. Now just wait until somebody makes a real 1/35 Fennek, and not that toy version that seems to pop up at every modelling show

Nice job, Henk. It is a completely unknown vehicle to me. Looks great! Thanks for sharing

In a way yes, but the Boxer is considerably larger. I'll have to go to the LHS (where they are on display), to take a side by side picture of the Boxer and Stryker.

Hi Mat, you can get the kit now, but it will set you back around $200... but it IS a big lump of resin. I did a review here . A Fennek in 1/35, now that would be a nice thing. If only Tristar or AFVClub would ... I've wanted one of those for ages, to go with the YPR. Is the 'toy' version salvageable, or simply best ignored? Groeten Henk

Thanks Jesper, and you're welcome.

Hi Henk, stay away from the toy. I once saw onefor the first time from 15 meters away at a modelling fair in Eindhoven. I almost ran to it but when I came close I was veeeeeery disappointed. For a toy it actually looks good, but it is nowhere near a model, even worse than let's say if it was made by Zvezda in the 1970's I wonder why Revell still hasn't made a Fennek in 1:35. Their 1:72 version actually looks really nice. 200 dollars is a bit much for me at the moment unfortunately. But I will keep it on my wish list which is unfortunately very long
