I'm wondering if this was the actual state of the boat when they captured it or some of it happened while it was laying around in the US port. Either way, I think these would make some good references... too bad they're black and white though. Also note the protection grills in the flooding holes. I wouldn't even try to replicate those, especially on my 1/144 boats.

EDIT: This was done in '54 so I guess not that wartime accurate after all.
