"Paratroopers assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, ride an M1 Abrams tank after concluding a combined arms live fire exercise near White Sands Missile Range, N.M., Sept. 30, 2015."

How common is this practice nowadays?

Infanrty motto...

Never walk when you can ride. Never stand when you can sit. Never sit when you can lay down. Never stay awake when you can sleep.

That has to be the Dona Ana Range complex, so who’s tanks are those? Not sure where the 3D ACR is anymore, but don’t think they’re on tanks anymore, they’re a Stryker unit.

1st Armored Division moved to Ft Bliss, TX in 2011. It is most likely a unit from them. My guees is that 82nd ABN jumped in and linked up w/1st AD to conduct a combined exercise.

3rd ACR moved to Ft Hood, TX in 2006 and reflagged as the 3rd CR (Cavalry Regiment) using Strykers in '11.

It’s not a common practice anymore, i saw a video awhile ago that said the 101st rode abrams on the outskirts of Baghdad in the initial push during the invasion. We have doctrine for riding on tanks but to practice it and all that is a major safety issue. It’d take a brigade commander to sign off on it.

Thanks Greg. I've raised an eyebrow when I saw the photo, I've figured it wasn't a mundane practice.
