Would fallschirmjager in 1940 be wearing any splinter pattern or was this begun in 1941? If they didn’t would the uniforms on the Dml figures for the 7.5 Leichtgeschütz 40 be okay to paint in the 1940 smock without modification ?

Fallschirmjager attacking Eben Emael, etc., in 1940, were still wearing the early pattern step-into jump smocks. They were an over-all light green, or reed green, in color (as usual, exact shades could vary). None of the early smocks could be worn with the bottom loose as they were made as single-piece with "shorts". The later patterns were camo'ed and the bottom edge was held together with snaps to form "legs" while descending on parachute.

Thank you for the link, i did google the uniforms prior to this i was more concerned with whether or not they used the splinter in 40 or 41 lol. It almost looks as if the jump smock didn’t change all that much even if it had a different pattern on it but that’s just to me i May be wrong

A pile of years ago I did a diorama of the German blitzkrieg 1940 based on a photo of a bunch of fallschirmjaeger holding up the flag as a Sdkfz 231 went by.

I looked everywhere and back then there were like two books, an Almark uniform monograph and the Osprey MAA. Both said the splinter wasn't issued until after the Blitzkrieg in 1940.

So many new resources but I've looked at several group pictures of paratroopers cheering on the blitzkrieg and never saw any camouflage just the green step-in jump smocks.

There's also the issue of the side lace boots.

I’ve never even noticed the boots before! I’d love to see the diorama i think i know the exact footage you’re talking about in the newsreel of the Germans advancing through i believe Holland right?

I sold it on Ebay but I remember the research I did. One armored car in the footage had a bicycle just thrown on the rear. At the time I had to use Italeri figures which had the side lace boots. They were passable for the 20th century.

Ahh i see, yeah it’s amazing how well technology has influenced our molds for modeling and how much more detail we can get out of our kits nowadays

Another question i have is I see a lot of the early war figures in a jump smock that’s grey but is it the same field grey as the Heer uniforms in 1940 or is it a lighter grey?

In B/W photos lots of lighter colors appear similar. The early pattern jump smock was usually light green/light olive/reed green, but the shade could vary (as it often does) to a kahki-ish, or gray-ish tones. The smock was to be worn over the blue-gray flieger bluse - if the jacket collar with collar tabs are to be seen over the jump smock then the visible jacket collar should be the gray-blue. This:

is meant for war-gamers, but gives an in-depth of the uniforms and colors.

I started using the Andrea miniatures paints and that’s when i realized those pints would be great for the pants, i had actually recently been home and was looking through old builds when i saw a fallschirmjager from my Crete set and he had light grey for his Smock. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this subject but i remember using the Vallejo war game paints when i did it. I just need to find a way to do the highlights, when it comes to that would using the Andrea highlights work when it comes to first second and third shadowing and highlighting and just switching the main color to a lighter Rey rather then a field grey?
