Hey guys, I have two questions on periscopes for my Sherman and building.
First question, who makes a good detail set for Sherman periscope? I found a quite a few on scalemates but none of them seem to to be available for purchase.
Second question, among my searching I have found several Periscope kits done in clear plastic. Has anybody ever use these? And or are they worth the money?
Thank you for your time

I've always hated the clear periscopes. TMD makes great periscope sets. I HATE the dml ones.

I have never seen the point of clear periscopes either. They never look clear on an actual vehicle.

Thanks for the links. They look good. If I dont like the way the clear parts turn out I'll just paint them.

They are a gimmick. On a real tank they do not look clear unless you are actually looking through them. At a distance, they look like dark, glossy slits.

I have used the clear option parts in the Asuka kits, but mainly because they are better molded and the solid parts had sink marks and warping. I paint over them.

I think this thread is a good primer to see who has a good paint mix for Sherman glass. I currently have 2 on my workbench needing the glass painted.

I like this thread and thank you all! For those that are in the paint over category what color do you use for the US WW II stuff and do you top it off with a gloss coat?

Armored glass up until the early '80s was clear, but the thickness gave it a green tint. To replicate this, I start with a coat of flat black, then a couple coats of clear green. Lastly, a couple coats of gloss to finish them off.

For more modern optics with the red anti-laser coating, I do the same as above, but use clear red as opposed to clear green.

Nice tip, thanks. Ive always done the straight black than clear gloss. Ive been thinking about other colors, never thought of green before. Its been a few years since Ive done armor modeling, so the clear parts is new to me. Im gonna play around with them just ti see what I can do. I can always go to the pant and clear method if I dont like it.

I took Gino's advice and this is what I came up with. I did add in some Tamiya Smoke on top of the clear green.

FYI, Joe at TMD had some serious damage to his house and workshop in the recent hurricane, so he has no comms at present. He says he'll be back up and running as soon as possible, but don't be surprised if he doesn't acknowledge and ship your order immediately.

Oh damn! Thanks for the heads up. I was just about to go and place an order myself. Hope he's ok.
