I've been playing around with the idea of a diorama for ages now. It started when i picked up a couple of random kits, the Tamiya German Field Kitchen and the MasterBox 'A break between battles', the tankers playing football.
I thought where could i put them in the same setting. the idea of a weary set of German troops arriving at a farm on the German / Ardennes border, setting up a field kitchen and having a game of footy with the kids whilst the family watches on.

I'm in the city for 10 weeks so using the time away to get started on the figures. The first set of kits is with me

and the first of the actors built up

This may end up being bigger than Ben Hur but we'll see how it goes

A very interesting bunch Colin, none of the usual suspects either - I’ll be curious to know how you got on with the Masterbox figs, both their own proportions & compared to other makers’ figs. My own limited experience is “variable” but I’m eyeing off a few of their civvies sets myself. Now then, about the dio base for the full-size soccer pitch they’ll be playing on…

The quality is very variable, some of their figures show marked mold separation lines, detail can be soft on some of their older sets as well, whilst some of the new ones are very good. I'm currently thinking of replacing some heads with hornet ones for better expressions.

proportions are a bit off, one of the figures is supposed to be a child but is larger than the farm woman. i suppose we're not all the same size though

as for the size of the base, its growing in my head, i have a couple of miniart buildings plus the farm wall and workshed, and it may also involve a field on the other side of the wall with a couple of snipers bagging rabbits for the pot

Picked up a couple of new kits to add some other humour elements to it......

And i'm also in a bit of a dilemma, I want a vehicle in the diorama but not really into German WWII battle tanks, so the idea is that this will be a reconnaissance unit, either late autumn ish '44 or early spring '45. so a reconnaissance vehicle is needed to add to the bikes and kubel. i have a couple, but which one

For the time frame of late '44/early '45,, I'd go with the Sdkfz 140. You might also consider a PzII Lynx. Same size as the 140, but also better suited to your time frame.

Cheers for the advice. I have an upgrade set for the 140 so was maybe going that way anyway, but i'll keep an eye out for the Lynx as its an interesting looking little vehicle.

as an aside, would the 250/9 have been used in Eastern Europe at any time?

Don't know about the Eastern front (my guess is yes), but for that time period,if 250/9 it is, you should choose the 250/9 neu with reshaped Hull design, e.g. https://www.ebay.com/p/Dragon-1-35-6316-Sd-kfz-250-9-NEU-2cm-Reconnaissance/2256060518

Ah i see now, may have to go with an earlier time set, i'm looking at doing a similar theme, but winter on the eastern front, thick snow, overcoats etc

a slow update. this is the Kubel that is being worked on. i'm finding weathering a little less subtle without the airbrush, but it looks ok

farm animals

footy team

milking crew

food crew

granpa and granma

i did find that the undercoat, which is Army Painter matt white primer left quite a rough coat on the figures, but not on the animals lol.
and yes, theres some filling and mold line removal to do as well

i've also added the cooks from the Tamiya Feldkuche kit. detail is very soft though

slow progress

They look great & generally the most natural/realistic poses – hopefully the rough primer surface should help avoid the dreaded shiney clothes. Does Masterbox supply the ball & goalposts?

I’m confused where this is set - the Ardennes, eastern Europe & then the Eastern Front have been mentioned so far. But the only places I can imagine the local peasantry happily fraternising with the German army like this would have been Ukraine or maybe Latvia June ’41 to say October ’41 (most of the figs don’t look ready for winter), or within the German/Austrian border anytime. The folks in Belgium/Ardennes area weren’t exactly pleased to see these guys on 10th May 1940…

they supply the ball and a couple of logs to act as goalposts, i may see if i can get a folded bit of clothing to replace one.
hopefully the rougher surface will provide some texture to the clothing

i'll probably change the location to just inside the German border to suit the scene.
i am planning to do something similar with some winter figures i have and will keep you're suggestion in mind for that, cheers

Hi Colin, I’ve got plenty of genuine leather off-cuts from my Merc limo seats for extra ball authenticity – red alas but probably dye-able brown...an interesting piece of origami to make it spherical!

Anyhow there must be other potential locations – maybe Croatia ’41-42, or Vichy (southern) France? Although I get you’re after the recreational aspect, adding a subtle sinister atmosphere might add interest i.e. an illusion of contented Occupation…maybe a German army photographer filming it for home consumption? I think Masterbox or someone else does a propaganda film unit, & a rare opportunity to put that unit’s tactical sign on the Kubel? Just a thought

I'm not sure that it's viable to do in scale, but you could take an unwrapped soccer ball diagram, use it to cut the leather, then form it around a core. I suspect the leather you have will be too thick for that method to work, though.

(the above is an example of unwrapping a segmented ball; older soccer balls will have different segmenting, as in this example; I couldn't find an unwrap of the older style, and it may not unwrap flat enough to be useful.)

Have you considered rolling a ball of Milliput (or other medium of your choice) and sculpt in the required pattern? The 40's era balls didn't look 100% round, so you have some margin for error.

I like that idea,i think Miniart do a British war correspondent unit, but i should be able to adapt a German figure to do it. nice idea about the Kubel as well

a couple of questions on uniform colours. i'mm using the Vallejo range and have put a couple of preliminary coats down. the two colours i'm trying are german field grey and german uniform...

field grey on the right and uniform on the trousers on the left

the grey looks too dark and the uniform too green.

i've tried a couple of combinations but not sure which way to go?

progress isslow as i'mm also working on this.....

First few figures on their way to being done. I settled on a mix of 50% field grey, 40% light blue grey and 10% uniform green

I've got more work to do on the skin, especially on the boy as i've only basecoated him.

I made a start on the aufsklarung fro italeri. Its a bit of a pig to go together

the cows and the goat are from the Masterbox "operation Milk Man", the dog is in the Masterbox "a break between battles" (the footy match) and the pig from the Miniart "German tankers at rest"

I've also got thetamiya farm animals set for a few more bits and a resin food set that has a couple of chickens and some rabbits in it. The rabbits are hung ready for skinning and i'm planning on having a couple of soldiers practising their sniping skills in a field with a brace of rabbits next to them
