I alway painted them steel, slightly rusted with wooden handles like on a shovel. Now I know.

Way more complex than I'd ever thought, I also thought that the handles were wooden -good to know now how to properly paint them. By the way I suspect that the ring below the cutter head is either deteriorated bakelite or (considering the grain on it) it might be some form of fibreglass. Just a thought. Thanks again.
