That's it! Stop right there! The first full, working Merkava prototype

Here we go: the very first production Merkava then...

...and now.

Merkava, it is. Bear with me, this is gonna be a looooong one...

Let's start with the first wooden model of the Merkava

1137.

1138.

Maj.Gen. Israel 'Talik' Tal, the father of the Merkava project

1139.

The second wooden model of the Merkava then...

1140.

1141.

...and now

1142.

1143.

1144.

1145.

Merkava mock-up on a lengthened Sho't chassis with Sho't turret

1147.

1148.

The more Merkava-like second Sho't based mock-up

1149.

1150.

1151.

1152.

1153.

OK. We want it to look like this:

1154.

Not quiet there yet. Magach turreted Merkava Frankie.

OK, what now? On one hand, I still have hundreds of IDF classics to upload, on the other, Meng’s latest announcement makes me itchy to throw a bunch of Merk IV pictures into the thread...

Thank you for the photos
I would like to see some Merkava 1 pics

I don't think you can go wrong Israel, I'm really only interested in modeling tanks myself, but I am enjoying seeing ALL of the photos you post, even the softskins.

The name of the thread includes 'heavy metal' and I presume that the Merkava IV fits into the 'heavy metal' category so go right ahead, fill our screens with Merkava IV. The occasional classic doesn't hurt but there has been a lot of those already so I think we can survive for a short while. If the itch for classics gets too bad I can always check the older posts again

Thanks Israel, I really enjoyed the pictures. I like the old style transporters, due to the various vehicles used at the time.

That's a LOT of scrap iron to send into the recycling system ...

Somewhere there is an image similar to # 1012 which shows how an anti-tank round, I presume an Israeli APFS-DS, has forced its way into the side of a gun barrel, entering the barrel and finally exiting through the breech into the turret.
If it is already posted in this thread, please tell me the number.

Breathtaking collection. But picture 971! An M22 light tank!

Check out pictures 421 through 431 on page 4. I was surprised too as I had no idea it saw (very limited) service in the IDF (AFAIK not more than three tanks). All were captured Egyptian vehicles.
