Good question. It was used for...something. I don't think it actually saw service in the IDF. Nevertheless, the vehicle(s) apparently stayed in Israel as one of them is on display in Latrun (might be even the very same vehicle pictured here); there's another one dumped somewhere in the Hermon.

Think a number of these arrived to Israel in lots along with other variants. Probably as source for spares for the rest of the fleet?

The Merkava Mk.II based 'Ofek' heavy APC was designed to be used by medical, logistics, ordonance and command units.

This photo was posted in another thread on this forum, about Diamond T's.

But notice the armoured flamethrower truck in the bottom right corner. I've never seen anything like this before: I thought the flamethrowers were on half-tracks. From the wheels it looks like a US 2.5-tonner chassis: GMC or similar.

1403 is almost definitely in the Northern Negev. 1404 looks like Northern Israel, but judging by the vegetation the photo most likely wasn't taken in the Golan Heights but rather during an exercise in the Upper Galilee region.

Oh yea! Talk about a quick build! A Merk in what looks like to be a river bed, pretty much showing very limited detail of the upper hull that is almost submerged, and then all of the turret.

Just think: a hull with no lower hull detail, no bogies, no tracks, etc.

1403 and 1426 shiow the new Merkava variant. There is the LIC version and the photos show the LEECH version, found in a swamp near you...

Always wondered, wouldn't that add-on turret armor of the 3D have created a pretty bad shot-trap on the lower sides of the turret?

Also, what's that large device / housing on the turret of the nearest tank in pic 1430?

Possibly, but the advantages probably outweigh the disadvantages. The lessons learned from the 2D and the 3D were implemented in the Mk.4's turret design which follows the same principle.
