Hello everyone,
I finnaly started building a spraybooth to get airbrushing again...
I'm using a 100 Watt fan from an old kitchen hood.

The old kitchen hood dismantled.

I had a lot of cleaning-up to do, took me a few hours with some degreasing products. Nasty job but it's cheap...

The new (spray)box will be made from MDF

I milled an opening for the speed and light buttons, which I'll reuse from the old hood.

Gluing the panels

Fillet the edges with a router, some sanding, ready for paint

first layer of primer

I had to fill an opening in the fan-house with a block of foam

I glued a piece of ducktape over the foam with some construction glue.

Here I installed the fan, on the right side the buttons for speed and light are mounted in the milled opening.

Back (110mm output pipe, will be connected to a panel in the window, with a flexible hose)

Front

So that's what I have so far...
next I will make a replaceable filter grid and mount some LED strips for lighting.

Thanks for reading & kind regards
Steven

Hi Steven, nice job so far on your booth. What are the dimensions of it? The reason I ask is when I built mine I configured the fan on the outside rear. This gave me more room on the inside. You can always frame it in for cosmetic reasons, and only have the switch and lights on the inside, with a 1 inch space at the inside rear for the filter. When I built mine I wanted to be able to paint 32nd aircraft, etc. Best of luck with your build. Best regards....Dale

I concur-once you put in a filter and prefilter, you won't have much room to spray

Hi Dale & Joe,
I don't have experience with any spraybooth yet, it is indeed a compact model.
It will be most used for 1/35 tanks, but also some 1/72 and 1/144 models. So hopefully it will do the job.
I based my design a little bit on those popular 'Hobby Craft...ventus' spraybooths types...

In this pic I added the dimensions (bottom area 45,5 x 34cm ... Filter area 45,5 x 31cm)

Today I finished the spraybooth, I started by cutting some cheap grids (towell-household-thing)

There will be 2 grids installed and between those grids I'll place the filter.
Here I drilled holes through the bottom, the grid is secured with 4 tie-wraps. (works like a hinge for maintenance)

The first grid mounted.

For the light I planned to use IKEA "DIODER" (4x LED strip), but before installing I did a test and it seemed to be insufficient for a spraybooth (better suited for lighting diorama's).

I reccently bought a LED working lamp (10watt - 3700kelvin - 700LM), and I think this one works better. I decided to not yet connect it to the speed/light buttons and will test some other lights later...

Here I installed the filter between the grids, at the moment it's just 1 layer of cheap kitchen-hood-filter, does anyone have recommendations for other cheap filter solutions?

The spraybooth fits in my closet, which is great

Here you can see the buttons for fan speed (0-1-2-3) and light (0-1)

This picture gives a better look at the scale; My model in progress (Italeri Sherman 1/35) and some vallejo bottles.

I still needed a rotating disk to spray models more easily, I found this IKEA "SNUDDA" cheese-disk (good bearing and bottom rubber)

But 39cm (15.35") is too large for me, so I made it 24cm (9.4") with a jig saw and some sanding.

The LED spotlight on top

I haven't yet tested it with my airbrush, but for now I did the A4 paper test and it worked fine with the first speed setting.

The Sherman needs a bit more work before painting, but I'm looking forward now to get it airbrushed!

Hi guys!

Yesterday evening I finished more parts on the Sherman, so today I was able to finally do some airbrushing

It's the first time I use Vallejo paint, so I need more practice to get it thinned properly. I tried to pre-shade it with 'white primer' and 'gloss black'.

The spraybooth works fine, I've used 2 kitchen filters between the grids, the 3rd speed setting and my LED spotlight. The 2nd speed button needs a fix however (bad electrical contact in the switch) will try to spray some 'kontact 60' into the switch to get it fixed...

I might attach some (mobile) extra MDF panels to the front when I need more spraydepth, but for this Sherman I think it's just large enough.

Neat work so far, Steve000

I use the same/similar Fleecy filter materiel as here:

With a tumble dryer hose out the window, after 2+ years light-medium use, the inside of the hose is still pristine.

A plastic box had saved me a lot of work indeed...
Looks effient, I think I'm using the same hose.
Are you using 4 holes with a large fan behind it, or 4 fans?

Goodluck on the horsa
