hi guys, here is my current project, a very nice little kit by TM : the VBL Panhard, french army. I will finish it as part of the Mali / sahel french anti-terror operations.
for the moment i'm working on the interior and started some detailing on the exterior from scratch. also build a driver to go in ...
here are the pictures

Lookin' good, Franck! Nicely painted and weathered, interior.

How does the kit go together? This is a kit I've had an eye on for a while. The interior looks great! Shame to button it up...What color did you use?

What will you be adding to the exterior?

I've built Tiger's AMX 10 RCR and it went together great --- after I finish painting, my plan is also to put it in a Mali diorama. Hopefully Blast will continue to release civilian and French Army figures and vehicle accessories appropriate for that theater of operations. Their first AMX crew is great! Is your VBL driver one of their figures?

Come to think of it, the French Army in Mali would be the perfect subject for a MasterBox figure set with French Army interacting with civilians and possibly a second set returning fire as they fight the terrorists.

Keep up the good work, Franck! Will be watching this build with great interest!!

With Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

Hi Johnny,
the VBl is the same great quality as the AMX-10 RC kit. I look forward to get my VBL MILAN soon.
As for Operation Serval figures, I will bring it to the CEO of Masterbox on the Nuremberg Toy Fair.

thanks for the good words guys,

Johnny, Dan, for the interior green i've used Modelmasters Chromate zinc, looks like a perfect match for the interior green.

Johnny : the kit goes together very well, with very little flash here and there. the interior is quite well detailed but leaves room for a super detailing. but note that not much would be visible once the main body will be closed. regarding the body : some putty will be needed at the joint between the 2 main parts.
for the driver it's a kitbash of various parts i had on hand. accuracy isn't a problem here as almost nothing will be visible ...

also, from numerous pictures, TM have missed the external routing and housing of the main antenna which is easy to add.

a link i'v found very useful :

http://www.primeportal.net/apc/jean_thomas_rembert/vbl_3rd/index.php?Page=1

hope this helps

little update : it's now closed

i didn't emphasize on painting the driver as almost nothing of him will be in sight once the dio will be finished.

as you can see some putty work will be needed on the main body, but nothing major here

next step : having the front wheels steered ...

Nice build Franck. The antenna TM omitted is the GPS one. The radio antenna is behind the driver on his left.
In some instances (I guess on the VBLL, long version), the antenna is on the left front corner of the roof.

The driver looks good to me.

Merci Olivier

i didn't know for the GPS housing which means i should have add the GPS big screen on the passenger side i guess i still can add that ... will try

do you know if the camo proposed by TM (desert one with standard european camo for the PL127) was in use in Mali or is it just one retrofitted vehicle as seen on Prime Portal ?

I don't know for the combination of desert camo and NATO PL127 mount.
I'll check in my ref pictures. For operation Serval most of the vehicles came from France and were in the usual European three-tone camo but some came from pre-positioned units in Chad and other countries in Africa. Those could have been camoed as TM suggests.

Thank you Olivier it looks like French camos are like German ones during WWII lol ...

did my homework today by adding the GPS screen and controller on the passenger side, it had been easier than i first thought !

what i didn't add is the screening for the windshield, as it would kill the lighting in the vehicle once in place

i guess i will take some liberty with the camo as the mixed scheme is appealing ... and afterall this vehicle exists

Franck, thanks for the reply and also for photographing and sharing your excellent work!

Hermann, thank you very much for feedback on the kit as well as the offer to take the suggestion of French Army or Foreign Legion figures and civilians from Operation Serval to the MasterBox CEO.

That would be awesome as would a similar set of SADF / Rhodesian figures, civilians, and terrorists as well.

Lots of "diorama in a box potential" with both subjects I would think. Crossing my fingers --- good luck and thanks again, Hermann!

With Regards and Aloha,

Johnny B.

I know Foreign Legion sells well in the modelling community but it took nearly no part in Serval operation. The only unit deployed during Serval was a BG formed up with the 2e REP HQ, one or two companies and one company of 1er RCP (regular infantry paratrooper unit). They jumped over Northern Mali in the largest combined operation during the campaign which committed Chadian forces as well.
Most of the ground units were infanterie de marine (infantry and cavalry amphibious units equipped with VAB, AMX 10 RCR and VBL), mechanized infantry (equipped with VBCI) and of course artillery and engineer units.

As a side note, French troops had/have a standard equipment in the combat units so whatever the title of the box, the content will be the same.

hello gents,

i am now working on the underside of the VBL. i wanted to have the front wheels steered and previously thought it would be a tedious work. Finally i just had to cut the molded on steering rods, place the brake hubs at the desired angle and finally put some new rods in place

the rear is build straight forward without any problem, the propeller fits perfectly in place and was an easy clean-up job

that's all for today, as usual all your comments are welcome !

Hi gents, i'm going on with this project

for those interested in building it take note that the rear wheels hubs need some "love" (understand :cutting) in order for the wheels to be aligned as their pins are too long.
Also : as the wheels are supposed to roll (still don't know why ?) they have an inner part which isn't sooooo much centered so : glue will be needed here

on the following picture you will note that i have done some surgery to the famas door stand ... as a fig will have it in its hands outside of the vehicle.

while the main body parts need some filling, do not fill with putty the rear parts are they are add-ons to the main body and shows a good gap in real life.

what is a good point is that all the lights have to be added from the exterior, so no need to glue them in place before painting

that's it for today,

Franck.

Good job Franck,
however it looks like your FAMAS barrel holder is not correct. Here are two pictures of the actual different types.

Am I right that the French Army uses steel helmets for training in France and Kevlar helmets in combat operations like Mali and Afghanistan?

Blast Models recently released various figures that could be used for African scenarios like Operation SERVAL in Mali.

Till last year, you would have been right Hans-Hermann. Currently the Kevlar helmet has become a standard issue except for the rookies in the basic training units and most probably the reserve units.

hi guys,
after many problems using AK interactive paints, i finally got a basic finish that i was happy with ... won't ever use those paints again !

I had to heavily modify the turret gunner to fit in place.

the whole composition is based on numerous documentaries i watched on youtube of french special forces operations in Mali / Sahel. Most of those ops were aimed to cut the terrorists chain of reappro and finally get rid of the various groups operating in Mali. timeline is around 2014 - 2015.

still a lot to do on the vbl, figs and groundwork but it slowly begins to look like something
