Yesterday I came across this site. It has massive amount of pictures and tons of useful information. An absolutely MUST SEE for hardcore IDF AFV's fans. It even has a nice collection of IDF armor battalion/brigade/division insignias on the right hand side (did I mention the 7th Brigade is the best...?).
I warn you, you'll spend hours in front of the computer browsing through the photos and reading interesting stuff (you better let your wife know...).

This beauty (built by an excellent Turkish modeler called Özgür Güner) resembles the platoon commanders tank of my ex-unit, the "V-Vulcan" platoon, 77th battalion, 7th Armored Brigade of the IDF.

Thanks for the link, what awesome pictures there.

The green/yellow flag indicates that this vehicle is manned by IDF's 1st infantry, the "Golani" Brigade.

Question - I know very little about Israeli vehicles. Is the Namer the standard "heavy" APC in service? What is the Namer HATAP?

Why the difference in armament? Looks like not all have the remote operated weapons station.

Not yet, but it will be. Eventually it will replace all the other ones (Nagmachon/Nakpadon/Achzarit), even though some of them probably will survive as platforms for special vehicles.

You can find my explanation on page No.3. Basically it's not a vehicle, but rather the name of a whole crew with their appropriate AFV (M113, Achzarit, Puma, Namer) optimalized for repair.

According to the IDF's doctrine, different purpose call for different equipment. That's the reason by the way for the existence of so many different special units.

With hundreds of (now phased out) Merkava II's laying around, it was natural to use them as platforms for HAPC's. The Merkava's are simply crying to be converted to this role: since they're equipped with front mounted engine and rear-hatch, all was needed is removing the turret, the gun and the ammunition, add a simple superstructure and voila, you've got the "Ofek": a Merkava II based HAPC which is supposed to replace the obsolete M113's used by command / medical / logistic /technical support units. The "Ofek" is a fine example of re-using old equipment in a completely new role at the lowest possible cost.
