...did some painting - Mr Hobby "SAIL".. not sure its the worlds best... anyone got a good medium to thin Mr Hobby? Tamiya thinner perhaps?

Gunze "Mr. Color" is a lacquer, similar to Tamiya lacquers. Tamiya Yellow Top thinners will work in a pinch, but it's not the best choice-- I recommend Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinners. However, if you are referring to Gunze Aqueous, (which I believe is what you are referring to as Mr. Hobby),any good aqueous thinner will work-- I've even used Testors in the blue label bottle. "Mr. Color" paints tend to be concentrated in the bottle, and will thin out beautifully for airbrushing using their proprietary Leveling Thinners-- and will go three times as far when they are thinned. I've tried other types of thinners with "Mr. Color" and "Gunze Aqueous" with varying degrees of success, but their proprietary thinners are best.

thanks Kenneth... am getting in to softskins (next build will be a Vietnam M37 and I also have a Holmes Wrecker in the stash)....

quad has been painted. Mr Hobby "Sail" seems a good starting point. Any thoughts on how well it will mix with Vallejo acrylic to lighten? Must say, Mr Hobby sprays really well when mixed with their own thinner - think I may start getting more of their colours...

Robert,

Assuming you are modelling a vehicle in Italy (as that "Sail" colour seems a reasonable match to the "Light Mud" colour of that theatre and used nowhere else), then the Micky Mouse ear camo needs to be in Black, not Burnt Umber. Also, the entire roof, bonnet and top of the limber need to be in black with the mouse ears extending over the top onto the sides and up from the wheel wells. There is a definite pattern for these vehicles and they were generally painted pretty close to the desired pattern (British RSMs being what they were, and all).

But it was never brown with the light mud in Italy.

Now, if you were doing an English based set in about 1943, then the burnt umber isn't bad as the disruptive (needing to still cover the roof)but the body of the vehicle needs to be "service colour" not "sail"./ Service colour is best described as "fresh dogshit brown" and the contrast between that and the darker brown disruptive isn't very large leaveing a more monotone vehicle.

If you are looking at the Middle East October 1942 patters, where the slate, brown, black or green are acceptable disruptives, the underlying vehicle basic colour is supposed to be Desert Pink, not Slate.

By April 43 the basic colour was supposed to be Light Mud.

All through 1942 the base colour could be Light Stone or Portland Stone, but the diruptives should be slate, black or silver grey.

There really isn't a time when it should be Portland Stone and brown.

However, if you like it as it is, then it's certainly good enough for me as it's your model and this is a hobby. Just trying to pass on the information that you can then choose to use as you like. :-)

Carry on, sir.

And, BTW, that's not a bad shade of Portland Stone. A touch dark as you say, but an overspray of a lightened version could rectify that and provide a useful modulation effect.
