This kit looks quite neat even though I swear off Dragon kits, is the styrene extra turret armour in scale thickness or does it needs thinning/replacement?

It's styrene and beveled. The edges are quite thin but not nearly as thin as the metal skirts. If you're good with a blade/sanding stick, you should be able to get the edge much thinner. The trick of course is keeping it uniform and not sanding any divots into the edge.
