mm on my build im thinking about the front gun rather than putting in a jaded panther stile i thought about putting a tiger 1 turret like big sponson that would allow the gun more frontal defense than just a small firing ark

I like the idea of a turret in the front, but I don't know about the Tiger I. The whole Tiger I design wa already outdated by the time the tanks were fielded.

Considering the other known elements you will use like the Maus and Kugelblitz turrets, the Tiger I turret with its complete absence of slopes would seem rather anachronistic. To keep in line with the other more advanced stuff, personally I would go with a Schmalturm (Panther) or E-50 turret.

Looking forward to see those barrels you talked about...

2 x 28cm naval guns, = 11 inch naval guns= 280mm
Italians had a gun with these numbers & it weighed 25 tonnes ..so 2 guns = 50 tonnes

Here all along I thought they were 16 inch naval guns bahaha

You planning to share with us how you finally cleared that hurdle, or are you just going to keep us in suspense?

Interesting concept. Don't know about the Tiger, but I DO like the sponson idea. Certainly would not be too late for that to be considered. (envision it to be similar to the A7V's set up, just a much larger bore)

Crap. Just dawned on me: School's out this week for the summer. My wife works at one of the Junior High's and today is her last day. All the districts take Summer Break within a week or so of each other.

Back to the machinist in town or Shapeway's.

In the mean time, I'll finish riveting the turret and see about working on some of the less delicate detailing (so I don't dick it up while handling it).

So far, seems that the "wing" covers appear to be okay - no negative comments here or on an FB page I've posted to - so I'll mount them when the rivets are all in.

Mike

Mike,
Glad to hear the thumb is healing well. Good to see you back at it.

Perhaps now that school is back in session you've got another option back on the table for getting your barrels on the cheap.

it has been a awesome read you should have the paint getting finished on the way to war i don't think a bump would mess the painters up to much at 10 kph

LOL! No, 10 KPH should allow them to swing just a little!

I'm getting closer to getting the main gun barrels. That's the kick in the pants I need. Doing a little side work on a little plane and my M108. I've also begun the 2nd Kubel turret; the first one showed me a glaring omission. Hope I can fix the first one.

More to follow!

Hi Mike

I have also been quietly following on the side lines. This is simply INSANE, but it's the kind of insanity I love.

Excellent work so far. Keep at it.

Thanks Jesper. Thumb is "sealed" but not totally healed. Scar tissue will be an issue for some time to come - very sensitive, but functional.

I appreciate the kind words Kobus - means quite a bit.

Hi Mike

I have been following this quietly from the side lines - I must commend you on such an ambitious build and the skill which you are displaying in it. This is going to be one of those masterpieces people talk about for years to come.

Keep up the good work Sir!

Regards,
Kobus

First Kubel turret. Tamiya Panzer Gray with the Schatton Modellbau barrels painted using AKs True Metal Gun Metal. Probably go with one in the two color scheme and two in the late war scheme.

Or add a commander/fire control turret atop the main turret.

I'm thinking a crow's nest type: hatch with a rail around it - room for two officers and a radioman.

I really can't add much more to this (space and funds). I have a box of nifty detail items (antennas, smoke dischargers, IR, turned barrels, brass rod for rails and ladders, et cetera) that will keep me occupied. I really can't afford much more for this (you don't want to know my investment so far!), so unless something spectacular comes up, I'm pretty much done with add-ons. Which leads to:

Consensus and common sense do dictate that this beast can't operate alone (for any length of time). I acknowledge that the support units assigned to the Ratte would provide most of its protection again ground and air and all of its supply support.

With that, the main guns are the offensive weapon and any other weapons attached (MAUS/Kubels) are predominantly self-defense with a minor offensive role. Again, thinking it has all it needs (as mentioned, I do have a spotlight...so maybe).

First Kubel turret is painted; simple and panzer gray. I have the filters and whatnot for that scheme...should be fun. I'll do one more that way and the last two will be a late-war style.

It's a bit sad people have stopped commenting/ replying in this thread...

I just went in to observer mode. There's been a great deal of discussion on this project, which I have enjoyed as much as the actual build. The problem is that each suggested addition means more investments in time and money for Mike.

It's easy to want to add too much to this massive machine. But in actual use the Ratte would be accompanied by support elements to fill most of these roles.

The only thing I would suggest for the Ratte is to add a Coelin turret atop the main gun turret to give some air defense capability facing forward. Or add a commander/fire control turret atop the main turret. That could be a good mount point for your spotlight.

Anyway, keep up the good work and hope the hand is healing up nice. That was a nasty cut.

Hey Mike,

Define "sonderbraun." Literal translation is Special Brown. I figured I'd use dunkelgelb, rotbraun, and dunklegrun for two of the turrets.

Mike,

How about adding one or two of these with an IR filter,

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/afvclub/afv35125.htm

I have one of these partially assembled. If there's room, I think I'll put it on. Going to need to see where though...with IR it could be effective for the MAUS'. Remove the IR and it'd be good for the AA.

Hi Mike,
Amazing scratch build!! For the kugleblitz turrets I would do in the late war scheme of olive green base & then sonderbraun & dungklegelb, if you went down the re painting route to match the hull, you could even have one in red primer that was chucked on as a replacement & is receiving a new coat to match the rest??

Cheers Mike
