Doug,
After you logged in and finding that you're not logged in, try to hit Ctrl+F5. Maybe this will help.

Cheers

Bump!

Voting done! This month the categories seems a bit mixed up as stated...

Care to elaborate?

The choice between an entry being placed in the Advanced vs. the Beginner/Intermediate category begins with the modeler submitting the entry. I've checked the links provided and the categories and their corresponding entries are indeed correct based on the requests of those who entered and the category they wished to compete in.

Doug,

Try also deleting your internet cookies and logging in from a new page after doing that. You may have an older cookie cached that's leading you in circles.

My votes are cast. Good luck to all! Some really nice models!
Some entries do seem like they were entered in the wrong catagory but you also see this alot in local model contests. I know for me personally it is hard to decide if I am intermediate or advanced. Maybe some of the contestants struggled with the same decision.

Sorry for causing alarm, if I did so.

What I meant is some of the beginner/intermediate entries look like they should be competing in the advanced class, as some of the advanced entries look a bit beginner/intermediate. That is what I meant by mixed up, there are wolves among the sheep (and sheep among the wolves)

Okay, so the next question would be how does one determine what models should be in the advance section or beginner section. How do I determine that?

Each modeler must determine on their own which level of "skill" they have executed on that particular build and in general for their skill set. Things that could, but not universally, elevate a build into the Advanced category would be things like using PE, scratch-building, advanced or complex paint/finish/weathering techniques, resin conversions, etc. although an OOB build can certainly be considered Advanced as well based on how it's finished.

Ultimately it's a subjective classification...and those entering the contest for the first time are encouraged to look at past month's contests (and winners) to get an idea of what the competition tends to be like in the different categories and place their entry in the appropriate group according to their comfort level. Generally speaking, the entrants over the past months where we've had this breakdown in place have done a good job of sorting themselves into the right category. Some will stretch from the Intermediate to the Advanced, others will be more conservative in the opposite direction, but it ultimately balances out in the end.

Since the photos are the model and, unlike a standard contest, we don't have the actual entry in front of us to evaluate, the modeler's choice of category is respected. The higher level prizes go to the Advanced category as a further incentive to prevent people from "under valuing" their entry to increase their chances at winning but beyond that, it's up to the builder to know and decide which level they should be competing in.

Thank you for the clarification Bill. Well, like one person said, one modeller might place his work in beginners although it is looks deserve a place in the advance section instead. This also applies to vice versa. Well, I guess we would have to see.

I probably should have put mine in the beginners section

Thanks Bill.

I think there is a big difference between beginner and intermediate, so why not have 3 categories: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Real beginners would probably feel intimidated going up against intermediate modellers who may even be advanced, and if they got no votes, it might discourage them from entering again

Elph,

Not a bad suggestion, however we are limited by the sponsorship from DML in the number of prizes that we are able to award and adding a fourth prize category would not be practical at this time. It wasn't so long ago that we had just one single category where everyone competed together regardless of skillset but the current split was made in order to more broadly represent the community at large and provide a way for more people to participate.

Currently we are averaging right around 20 or so total entries in both categories per month so the Contest entry population isn't all that large (and combined with a voting population of only about 140 or so voters per month, some entries will inevitably get low or no votes depending). In most contest settings, splits are usually only done when there's a large enough population to justify it. Perhaps if more people entered and/or voted we could then have a case of being able to approach Dragon and/or another vendor to sponsor a Beginner's category/prize...

Im sure Dragon wouldn't mind throwing in a 1:72 scale kit for the beginers.

Hell, they can afford it. I do not see why not. Or are they trying to be money greedy... I will not finish off this sentence.
