SS Tankman
SS Tankman - Winter Painting of Tank
  • move

by: Engin Kayral [ GRAYWOLF ]

introduction

During the first winter on the Eastern Front, Dunkelgrau vehicles became easy targets to Russians in the snow. To solve this, Germans decided to paint their vehicles in white. As there was not enough white paint available for all vehicles, non-combat vehicles were generally not whitewashed. Some vehicles received only partial whitewashes, such as in stripes or only on the front. Some even used chalk, white sheets or stacked snow, when no paint was available.

The paint was water soluble, so that it could be easily removed in the spring, or run off when it started to rain. Unit markings, the stylized symbol of Iron cross - Balkenkreuze, and other markings were usually left in their original base color, to avoid having to repaint the markings.

Evolution Miniatures lately released a new series of German Tankers painting their vehicles in white. First kit EM-35089 depicts an SS tanker in winter clothing carrying a bucket of paint.
box

Inside the standard yellow-brown cardboard box of the company, the figure comes well packed with the body part and small parts like head, arms and accessories are seperately inserted into two different small plastic zip-lock bags. Parts are represented with easy to remove casting blocks.
The front part of the box shows a photo of the painted figure which can serve as a basic painting guide.
parts

The figure is sculpted by Sergey Traviansky in crisp and clean details, sculpting quality is evident at first look . Casting is almost perfect with no air bubbles and excess resin. Slightly visible seamlines on the right side of jacket and bucket will need a short cleanwork. It comes in 6 grey resin parts ;
  • Body : Over his turtleneck sweater, he wears a short-waisted Panzer jacket made of black wool ,typical with double-breasted front, wide collar and no exterior pockets. Details like cloth folds, shoulder straps, collar tabs, Iron cross ribbon, Panzer Assault badge and Iron cross badge are well defined on the figure. He carries a leather belt with a metal buckle over the jacket and relief on buckle is sculpted apparent.
He wears Reversible winter trousers with two flap cover side pockets and front flap cover with 3 buttons. Though it is painted in oak leaf camouflage pattern on the boxart, it can differ due to modeler’s choice. As for the footgear, he has long boots.
  • Head : Facial details and hair are well represented. He wears a M-40 sidecap. Eagle and Totenkopf symbols are well defined. Note that you should enlarge the hole on the neck of figure a little more for the good fit of the head.
  • Arms : Both show nice folds, eagle symbl on the left arm and texture of the Woolen Knit Gloves are well defined. Right arm is to posed to carry a paint bucket as left arm posed to balance the body.
  • Holster for Parabellum 1908 Luger
  • Bucket : Please be very careful when handling this part because the side ears to attach the handle of bucket are so fragile. One of them was damaged inside the bag and I have to scratch it in some way.
  • Piece of thin copper wire to make the bucket handle.

  • SUMMARY
Highs: Nice posing, sculpt and cast as always.Details are well defined.
Lows: Bucket holes to assembly copper wire handle are weak and one of mine was damaged.
Verdict: A good figure to display next to a tank painting figure or can be used in static scenes in different ways.

Calcium carbide when mixed with water makes a white paste that can be used as a white wash after mixing it with water, drawback is it comes of also with water . Side product is acetylene .
