Introduction

This is a brief look at another 2 figure set from Royal Models. This time, two British soldiers in North West Europe.

The Set

The set comes in a standard Royal Models small cardboard box with details of the product and manufacturer on the front. A colour picture is provided of the built figures for painting reference.
Each figure comes in a separate zip plastic bag and mine were further protected by some bubble wrap.

Figure 1 - British Soldier Leaning Forward:
This figure is cast in a light grey resin and consists of 7 parts; the upper torso, legs, separate arms, head and boots. The casting looks sharp with no visible damage. The figure is posed leaning forward at the waist, left leg raised slightly with the left arm resting on the knee.

He is dressed in early style battle dress with blouse and trousers. The blouse has the early style pleated pockets and the uniform has the correct number and location of pockets. Around the waste is a 37 pattern belt, and both front and rear brasses/buckles are present.
The boots come as separate items and show good detail on the anklets and boots.

The arms are separate and have the blouse sleeves down to the cuff. The hands are well done. The head, also a separate item, shows the face of a mature soldier. The detail is good and this should paint up well. The head sports a cap comforter which is a nice touch.

This is a simple figure. The stance is similar to that of an old Tamiya figure.

Figure 2 - British Soldier Standing:
The figure is cast in a light grey resin and consists of 11 parts. The upper torso and legs come complete, with separate arms, head and boots. Equipment comes in the form of a Mk I Helmet, No 4 Rifle, water bottle, small digging tool and a German helmet. The casting looks sharp with no visible damage. The figure is posed in a standing position, feet apart holding a discarded German helmet.

This figure is also dressed in early style battle dress with blouse and trousers. The blouse has the early style pleated pockets with the uniform having the correct number and location of pockets. Around the waste is a 37 pattern belt, both front and rear brasses/buckles being present. Skeleton webbing consists of left and right ammo pouches and a small stabbing bayonet (on the left hand trouser leg) which come moulded to the figure. A pair of anklets with ammo boots are provided to complete the body and these are nicely done.

There will be some flash to clean up between the legs, but nothing I saw to be concerned with.

The separate arms, slightly bent at the elbow have nice detail around the cuffs and hands. The head shows the face of a young soldier and a separate helmet with the chin strap moulded over the rim is provided to complete this item. Equipment as already mentioned is nicely cast to complete the figure.

Conclusion

Two useful figures that should be of interest to diorama builders and figure painters. The physique of both figures looks fairly good although both are a little on the small side of the1/35 scale.

Well cast and detailed, with minimal clean up these figures are another welcome addition to the range of British Infantry available.

Again I did feel they were a bit over priced, but I got mine in a sale for £10.00 which was very acceptable.

Normal precautions apply when working with resin.
SUMMARY
Highs: Well cast with good detail.
Lows: None I can think of other than price and possibly a bit on the small side.
Verdict: Recommended.

Greying slightly, but young at heart. I've been teaching adults off and on for most of my life. Left the services in 85 and first started modelling in about 87 for a few years. Then I had a long spell when I didn't build anything (too busy) and really just got started again during the summer of ...

Thanks for the review Alan- these look very good- I'll watch out for them in a sale Looking at the casting plugs at the end of the legs of figure two will this make it difficult to fit the feet?
