Advance to Kharkov 1942
Advance to Kharkov 1942, Gen 2 Gear

by: Jim Starkweather [ STAFF_JIM ]

This kit is one of Dragon's newest releases and features four figures at rest. They are units involved in the Kharkov defensive of 1942 in which the German 6th Army defended Kharkov from a Soviet counter-attack. The box is marked "Gen2 Gear" which means the weapons included are of the higher Gen2 quality. The figures include three Wehrmacht soldiers and one Luftwaffe ground soldier. Dragon's literature on the set indicates that they could well be used for other deployments and scenarios around that time period as well. While the literature says 'soldiers preparing to move forward to join the battle' they look more at rest to me.

Looking at the excellent cover-art one can immediately see great possibilities for these figures in individual settings in a diorama or vignette, but it's hard to imagine using them all in one diorama.

At the $13 price shown on DragonUSA's web site these figures would appear to be a good buy. Not only does this set include the Gen2 weapons, but also a photo-etch piece as well for the MG34 straps.

The photos can do most of the talking on this review so I will leave you to draw your own conclusions. I personally think this set shows solid value for money and certainly has potential for modelers working with Kharkov or the Russian front in 1942 as a backdrop.
SUMMARY
Highs: Nice Gen2 weapons. Realistic looking poses.
Lows: Gen1 figures. Figures not depicting similar movement or scenario.
Verdict: A solid set of figures that include good value for your money.

About Jim Starkweather (staff_Jim)
FROM: NEW HAMPSHIRE, UNITED STATES

I started building models in 1971 when I was 6. My first model was a 1/32 P-40 Warhawk. Revell I believe. From there I moved onto the standard cars, Apollo spacecraft, and other kid orientated kits. I don't know what got me started on Armor. I must have seen a Monogram tank kit one day and said "Mom...

Hi, Thanks Jim for this review. Pictures can worth thousands of words.. From what I see this set looks really cool. For me the last part plastic manufacturer need to improve on are the faces. Masterbox for example always made the same type of sqaure heads. But in this dragon set, figures heads look weel proportionnated and do reflect individuality. For the rest, notably equipements, Dragon still is the best offer on the market. Best, Julien

Thanks for the review, Jim (BTW, should this be an In-Box or a First Look review? ) Great photos as always. I really like these DML sets based on the Concord drawings. They provide great alternatives to resin figures - and from what I've read across figure forums are well-received as such (by figure modellers of course). Other that from DML USA, is this set readily available yet? I couldn't find them on the Cyber-Hobbies site a fortnight ago. Rudi
