Afrika Korps Motorcyclist (?)
Afrika Korps Motorcyclist

introduction

This figure was sculpted by Krisztián Bódi. As reported on Historicus Forma by Rudi Richardson, the figure was originally a DAK (Deutsches AfrikaKorps) officer leaning on an armored vehicle, so the motorcyclist tag line can probably be ignored if you are simply looking for a cool DAK-related figure.

Contents

This is a three piece resin figure. It is made up of the body, head and right arm.

the review

My first observation would be that, since the right arm is detached, a second optional arm pose might have been a nice addition: one without a leaning effect, for example, or simply in a different position. The left arm (for those who haven't yet looked in detail at the photos) is inserted into his jacket and thus is part of the body piece. There is some excellent detail in the left arm: the recess almost appears to break through to the back of the figure, which is very nice. The coat looks to be wind-blown, meaning the angles are very sharp and pushed in as if indicating a strong wind. Since the figure is obviously dressed for a sandstorm (goggles, scarf, etc.) one can assume the wind is a given.

The angular effect is carried up most of the greatcoat. The figure is wearing binoculars and has what appears to be a small black flask attached to his upper right side. As the photos show, this figure is very highly detailed in all areas. The only two complaints I can see are:

1. The exposed hand does not seem "right." The fingers appear to be of near equal length (the index finger is crossing over the middle finger, which is hidden below).

2. The ankles seem very small and skinny for what must include ankles, socks, and boot material. Perhaps this is just a skinny soldier though?

conclusion

Overall this is sure to be a well-received figure, since it is made exclusively for use in Afrika Korps engagements. It should be a snap to put it together as well. Even painting it should not pose too much of a challenge for most modelers as the greatcoat is probably 80% of the surface area, and there are no facial features (other than his ears) that even show up. So if you hate painting faces and have a DAK diorama or vignette planned, this is esthetically good for you! (joke). Another fine figure from MIG Productions.
SUMMARY
Highs: Great subject matter. Well-sculpted with great details.
Lows: Some minor issues with proportions.
Verdict: Overall a great addition for the Afrika Korps lovers or anyone in need of a unique DAK figure.

About Jim Starkweather (staff_Jim)
FROM: NEW HAMPSHIRE, UNITED STATES

I started building models in 1971 when I was 6. My first model was a 1/32 P-40 Warhawk. Revell I believe. From there I moved onto the standard cars, Apollo spacecraft, and other kid orientated kits. I don't know what got me started on Armor. I must have seen a Monogram tank kit one day and said "Mom...
