2cm Barrels for Flakvierling 38

by: Vinnie Branigan [ TEACHER ]

introduction
Here's a quick look at a value set from Aber consisting of four 2cm Flak 38 barrels. The Flakvierling 38 was possibly the most popular light AA gun of the German army during WWII, consisting of 4 2 cm Flak 38's on a quad mount and usually mounted on the sd.Ah.52 trailer. It was also mounted on various vehicles as the need arose.

the set
the set includes 4 turned brass barrels and 5 small PE frets containing the flash suppressor, so a spare one is included. You'll need it too..........more on that later. The set as sold, is intended for the 2cm Flakvierling obviously, and therefore fits the venerable Tamiya 2cm Flakvierling, kit number 35091, or for that matter, any of the Tamiya kits that has the Flakvierling mounted, although do remember that although it could replace the barrels on the Tamiya Mobelwagen, it would be incorrect to do so, since that's one of the ones that Tamiya got wrong and it should have had 3.7cm Flak 43's. Only the prototype had Flak 38's. The real value of the set though, is in a sort of value-pack, i.e., a pack of four Flak 38 barrels to use on the Dragon or Tristar Flak 38, or the Panzer 1, kit number 6220, or any other kit that needs a single Flak 38 barrel replaced.

The barrels themselves are really nicely made, and scale out at the correct size. As mentioned, the flash suppressors are supplied separately on a small PE fret, and therein lies the problem! These are extremely difficult to form into the required cylinder, for the neck of the suppressor, and the cone shape for the suppressor itself. Once formed convincingly, the best way of finishing the assembly is to solder it, and not everybody will possess the skills to solder it neatly. I know I don't. Hence the reason for the spare PE fret probably!

conclusion
Whatever you're thinking of building, if it needs a replacement flak 38 barrel, then this set gives you that and 3 spares! Or you just might be building the Flakvierling itself! Whatever reason you get it for, you just might be frustrated when you come to form the suppressor. Recommended for those who fell confident in forming and soldering these.

Disheartening to see that they are staying with the seperate PE muzzle flash suppressor arrangement (especially since there are others available without this) but at 4 in the pack at least you get multiple attempts at it if you only need 1.
