Introduction

There are a number of 1/16th scale Tiger 1 models available now in this large scale and a must have is photo etched engine deck grills. Photo etch has always been seen as a great improvement, but FC Model Trend has decided to revisit this improvement and now offers a set of 3D printed resin engine grills. So why is this an improvement over photo etch? Take a closer look.

Review

FC Model Trend is based in Spain and of late is becoming quite the powerhouse where moulded resin and 3D resin offerings are concerned. This offering from FC Model Trend provides the four main engine deck grills for the 1/16th scale Hobby Boss offering of the Tiger 1, but I see no reason that I am aware of that would restrict its use to this model. It is supplied in a clear plastic case with a hanger cut out. Inside you find a folded sheet of paper and a plastic bag that contains the 3D printed parts.

An examination of the parts did reveal a minor break in one of the grills in my sample and I am sure that if I contact FC Model Trend a replacement would be sent, but I like this minor damage as it takes away that perfect finish that I cannot recall ever having seen on a vehicle. So what makes this 3D printed offering better than photo etch and that is an easy question to answer; the wire is woven rather than flat and I feel is a good improvement in this scale.

To use this product requires the removal of two tabs on each of the four grills and is easy to tackle. If anything the sanding of the areas is the hardest aspect to avoid damage to the fine mesh, but it is easier to tackle than photo etch as it does not crease or bend. The fit of the parts to the Hobby Boss kit is perfect as you would expect and I am very happy with the product both in terms of what it offers and its ease of use.

Conclusion

This offering from FC Model Trend is one of those items that does exactly what it is supposed to and is an improvement over photo etch. The detail provided in the woven mesh is a great aspect, but in addition it just adds a more realistic visual finish in every way. If you invest in these I think you will be happy.

Well, at least in this scale you might be able to see that the grills on the actual tank are composed of two layers of differing mesh.
