Georgian Legion - Normandy 1944

by: Jim Rae [ JIMBRAE ]

a little background...

The Georgian Legion was one of those peculiar ethnic units formed from Georgian émigrés. Never entirely a volunteer force, many of its members were impressed into sevice by the Nazis. Neither were they entirely reliable - many 'defected' at the first opportunity and their numbers (around 30,00 in total) belied their combat-effectiveness..
DRA6277 - Georgian Legion, Normandy 1944

Is a four-figure set portraying German Infantry in a variety of interesting poses Three are in the act of surrendering, the fourth has ben wounded. All of the figures are sculpted wearing late-war uniforms and have the shor boots and gaiters rather than the more typically presented jackboots. The kit comes on three sprues, the larger with the figures and their personal equpment, the other two containing a useful variety of weapons. Moulding is crisp and completely flash-free with only a few very minor mould lines which are easily removed. The weapon set is superbly done (as we have come to expect from DML) and contains a variety of weapons. The weapons are:

1 MP44

3 Kar 98Ks

1 Mg42 along with seperate ammo belt and ammo box

2 Panzerfausts

1 MP 40

1 G42 Carbine

The poses of the figures are truly excellent, with some real thought having gone into their design. Again, the nature of these figures is 'generic' and could be used to portray any Wermacht or SS (with modification) unit in the latter stages of the war. An addition, which sadly doesn't work too well, is a small sheet of four 'stick-on' shoulder patches for the georgian Legion. These are a touch thick, which although well printed, are nottoo convincing. However, at least DML give this option..
Conclusions

This is a highly useful and superbly executed set. There are one or two 'nit-picks' such as the lack of the distinctive MP44 ammo pouches in the personal gear along with some helmets with covers. It would also be nice for Dragon to consider asking their sculptors to produce some more 'youthful' figures - many of those captured in Normandy (and in other theaters) were little more than young boys. This is really a set which will have a multitude of uses and I confidently expect many variations on 'the theme' to merge in the coming months. Once again, with this and the other new sets, Dragon is at the pinnacle of plastic figure sets.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
