Have to sort of disagree here. While not as crisp as todays Bravo 6 or such, the Verlinden figures from the 80's and early 90's that I have are pretty well sculpted, have good poses and good mouldings. The figures they have released the last 10-15 years or so, on the other hand, mostly look like druged monkeys. Can't figure out why they don't get new sculptors or simply close the figure lines... Cheers, /E

Erik, yes in fairness I have to agree that some of their older figures are OK. But while other manufacturers have forged ahead and set new (and much higher) standards, Verlinden have basically trodden water for the past 15 years or so, and sometimes have even gone backwards. Most of their recent figure output in 1/35 has been lamentable, with some truly embarrasing monstrosities. And who's the guy who sculpts those faces? He should be put on trial for crimes against resin. As you so say, monkey-like. - Steve

Sage advice, Brian. I'll bear it in mind next time I'm in a LHS or online and about to purchase a bunch of figures I don't like . Errrrrr .... well yes, if they want to remain a force on the market. Just a shame that they don't see fit to up their game. Maybe that has something to do with why they're no longer the market leaders they once were? Just a thought. I don't disagree Brian. As I said above, the inanimate stuff is fine. - Steve

A lot of the early figures in their range were sculpted by Roger Saunders (of Hornet fame) and were extremely good. I sometimes wonder how they lost their edge to other competitors given that they practically invented the aftermarket.
AUG 28, 2011 - 12:05 PM
Verlinden used to have a keen knack for making items that no one else would make, or items "in demand," and not just for military figures. Oddly, there are 1/24 modern police car and fire engine kits, and yet where are the 1/24 police and firefighters figures? There has been 1/35 AH-6 and now CH-47 helicopter kits and yet where are the crews? How about 1/24 scale weapons since Verlinden was very good at making weapons. How about 120mm dress uniform figures? What very odd is that a lot of the spokepeople, even owners of aftermarket companies do post on the forums. However, some older plastic and resin aftermarket companies no longer have a spokesperson to represent them on the forums. As such, I think some companies have lost touch with their consumers and what modelers want.

I have to disagree. Back in the 90s, Verlinden employed some of the best figure sculptors and those guys not only managed to portray a human form really well, but also did their homework on the equipment soldiers from various periods wore to battle. Yes, the releases were nicely painted as well... but it was definitely not the most prominent feature of those early figures. These days Verlinden's figures are sculpted in a way even the best painters wouldn't be able to "salvage". Mario

While i have made the mistake of buying some of their "modern" figures, some of the WW2 stuff is pretty good. I particularly like the engine and hoist, and the bunker interior stuff is pretty good too! i might get some of this and get into the WW@ stuff for a change.

What happened to their reference book line? VP used to be a powerhouse in several areas and somehow just got eclipsed by others. Their resin quality, casting, box art, packaging, and customer service are (still) very good in the USA. VP just needs to find new and very good sculptors and treat them well to get this company back into the competition. I agree that most of their diorama accessories are great. There could be more ideas and products in this area also from solar panels to satellite equipment to new generators and field gear.
